What generally happens now that I reported this person.

This person was harassing me and others by caging them. I reported him and the report said that all TOS violations were followed up with a resolution. Does this mean that these people always end up getting banned or? I am really interested in knowing what generally happens to these people, especially seeing that I won't know for some time as I do know it takes them some time to get to these. (at least that is what i heard)

Thanks, Wright

Long answer: The Lindens generally won't tell you what they do for discipline. You have to find out in other ways. They might talk to you for more information but probably not. LL has been bashed for being too lenient on violators, so good luck. On the other hand, even if they do ban someone, they can create another alt and come right back.

In a perfect world, they would suffer a slow and painful death, culminating with rodents devouring their Avatars. In actuality, they may get a warning, depending on the number of reports filed, possibly banned. I got caged once. I sat in the cage, organized my inventory and kept saying Highly Rude and Literate things to the griefers. Then I logged off and came back on, and went about my Second Life.

Defense measures
04-28-2007 07:56
If I were to have something to defend myself could that end up getting me in trouble? If I were to orbit someone in response to there having caged me there isn't a chance I could end up getting banned is there? I am thinking of getting this Omicron thing to defend myself for next time.

Thanks Again, Wright

Fighting back generally just escalates things. They usually travel in groups it seems, you orbit one and 3 come back at you. AR them, laugh at them, make fun of their tiny penises, whatever. It's an annoyance, one that I equate with those people from a particular religious group who knock on my door EVERY Saturday Morning, no matter how many times I ask them not too. :(

Get some pamphlets from whatever church you go to and give them to the door to door bible thumpers. ;) "No im not interested in your Religeon, but maybe you can convert to mine?"

To the OP small time greifing like caging isnt ever going to be a big priority - Ban the cager or IM the Sim owner to ban the cager, and move on, really.

As far as what happens you could read the police blotter and look for people being banned for caging and harasing others, I suppose - but I dont think you get a notice.

I consider caging pretty minor when normal land powers will protect you from it.

Ive been nuked and shot and caged , seen more uninvided naked men then I could count. Been peeped on numerous times, and then there was that masturbating guy on the flying cow ..

But, Ive only ever filed one abuse report and it involved someone putting personal information about his Ex Girlfreind in his profile, including an incest reference.

He was a greifer, dear. We banned him. But its too good a story to forget.

The griefers that really concern me are the ones who want to bring the grid down. Hopefully they are the ones the Lindens are focussing on. Ever since the grey good fix, this has really improved. So although some people think all I do is complain - I have to say on the truly scary griefing stuff LL has made progress.

True. The cagers and flagpole wavers are pretty much just nuisances, and sometimes actually amusing in a mischevious way. But the whole DNS thing is very disturbiing. What is the purpose? Just because you can?

*evidently SOME tech types really don't have adequate socialization skills*

I tried that once (am a pagan in RL) and the following week they brought their regional manager or whatever they called him, and the whole lot of them desperately wanted to "save me". Made me wish I had a large dangerous looking dog to loose on them.

Back on topic though, I've filed maybe 3 ARs over the months, and after a week or two they send a generic nondescript email that says the problem was 'resolved'. (Usually the email takes so long to arrive, I've forgotten that I sent an AR in the first place and have a moment of panic seeing an email from the abuse dept.) You never find out what the resolution was, I'm pretty sure this is in writing in their knowledge base or something, they do not disclose the results of their investigation, decision, or whatever else they do.

Ok right. That's the SL equivalent to the RL line.."Oh he was nobody. Just someone I met one day..."

That's when I sit out on my front porch, cleaning Dad's Shotgun.........

Or have coffee out there, with my brother...the policeman.

In my experience, only things that can be SHOWN to have happened, like when LL compares chat logs to the ones u might send them in an AR, do things actually happen fast. Its stuff like caging, pushing, or orbiting that may or may not be acted upon by LL because there's really no easy record of what transpired to use as proof of said incident. Sometimes they take someones word for it, like if there's multiple AR's from different people for the same incident. Sometimes there's just not enough proof to act on.
Purely defensive items like sit-shields are perfectly fine and still do work. However, using a counter-offensive weapon like an orbiter really can get you banned if the griefer decides to AR you if you use it. In all cases, the only way you'll find out what might have happened is to compare dates to entries on the Police Blotter page. They never just mail you back and tell you what they did / if they did anything.

Even the dates are inconclusive - they only post on the blotter every few days, and then all the new offenses bear the same, current date. I think they don't want people to reverse-engineer what false and defamatory complaint might get which penalty out of LL on somebody they don't like and want to grief via LL.

They are forced to wear a suit of tar and feathers and must stay logged in game like this for X amount of hours?
