by hiring that herald guy has LL completed a quiet coup in second life. their newest agenda seems to be one of control. they call it making the experience "predictable". this all sounds good. take zindra, that move made easlily encountered sex in world that much harder for the business noobs andedu tards tohappen upon. then take Xstreet. By ridding the main marketplace of amateurish content, the Lab's new customers will oly see the class of the content created (special stores? more of the same). Is such the thinking behind allthe fiddling with search.

LL is taking control of the face it presents to the world. is this such a bad thing?

Well is it a coup if the Lindens are exerting more control to attain their grail of a "more predictable experience"? They run the SL infrastructure anyway so it seems more like an incipient dictatorship to me.

Mind you, that still presses my buttons: even a more strictly controlled in-world experience has profoundly nefarious RP potential. Shades of 1984 and all that.

Or was it 1948?

Jeez, I'm so f@cked up.

What's left on xstreet doesn't look any less amatuerish than it did before - only more expensive.

Companies are in business to make money. That's the sole reason they exist. When it makes money, the business is successful; when it loses money, the business is a failure. Where a company's profitability depends at least in part on the face it presents to the world, then it has an ethical obligation to control that face and correct any bad features of it that it sees - or at least try.

When companies change things, a lot of people like to say things like "clearly it's only about the money with them, not the users/customers/longtime fans/patrons", as if at one time it actually was about those things. In a sense, it is about those things - where keeping the customers happy equals income. But often, different segments of the customer base are kept happy in different ways; and when push comes to shove, in order to survive, the company has to please that segment of the customer base where the most money comes from.
