I am probably one of the most continuously active Avies on SL (over 3 years). Note to the 'kids' ...... if you pick this post apart, you are missing the intent. Read before you type. Those of you that know me are probably shocked to see me post here, because I very rarely complain about this company. HOWEVER, in case many of you haven't noticed, the "Friends" Web page has been off line for approximately a WEEK. I understand that this isn't as 'sexy' a problem as "loss of date when covenants are changed" (LOL), BUT it is one feature I, for one, use several times a day. Several points to make: * Use of this page to see if someone is online probably DOES reduce some system load. * It takes far less time then a 'formal' log on. If I'm wrong about this, I apologize, but it seems pretty apparent to me. I"m beginning to conclude something that disturbs me terribly, but in today's corporate "ME ME ME" world, it is possible. I truly hope this is NOT the case!! Could this Corporation be placing the importance of fixing this issue at a low level because, if you use the "Friends" page you DO NOT count as a 'logged' avie? Does it artificially skew the 'attendance' figures? "Sexy"" problems are often fun to fix (with 30+ years in the hardware portion of the computer industry, I should know!) but often the "rotten" ones are those that unfortunately are SEEN by both customers and POTENTIAL customers. What could possibly be worse then "This page closed". Is there a time line for repair of this pretty vital page? This is my first "complaint" post in many years. Maybe it deserves some attention. I can find NO post or comments on this problem. Hmmmmmm??

I don't consider myself really as "kid" (nor in SL as in RL ). But anyway, I think we should first find out why that page is offline. Maybe there is a very good reason for it. Myself? I hardly use that page... but that is me Morwen.

LL knows why they did it. What they need to hear from us is that we really want it back. I thought it was pretty funny a month or so ago when the page was off-line for about a week, and during that week, the login tip was "Use the web page to see if your friends are online!" How ironic.

Gee, and I thought I was the only one questioning the definition of the word "temporary".

As I cannot access SL from work I like to access the 'friends online' page just to see whom of my friends are online..... this does have a flipside though as I get frustrated knowing that I cannot jump in and join the fun with my pals online! So maybe it's a good thing?!! No seriously I do wish it was back up and running

I find the lack of a out-of-world friends page quite annoying.
/me wonders if it's at all related to bbcode being turned off here in the forums. Seems a bit of a stretch but I guess it could be related...

Yep I agree - really frustrating.
I can understand that it might get turned off from time to time but it would be really helpful if LL could say why and under what circumstances they would bring it back.
I am still thinking about how to write this functionality myself so that I can integrate my SL friends into my desktop IM client...

if they are going to eventually get rid of it - now is as good a time as ever.
I admit I use the feature.
Id live without it.
I suppose that -
A third party could do it of course, you'd just need all your freind's Avatar keys.
Ask the "Right to Bot" people.

Yeah, I agree, it's annoying that it's still disabled. I've found the 'friends online' list to be really useful, especially at times when there's someone in particular I need to talk to or haven't seen in awhile.

I wish they would update us on this particular issue, although I think it would be safe to assume that they are probably looking at reworking the thing into something more robust. Even the in world friends stuff has been off kilter for a while now.
Go to the JIRA, there's a thing open on it under Web/Friends Online. I know it's not user friendly, but it's a way of getting LL's attention to the problem.

I also agree that it is annoying not having the page working. Like others, I often can't log into SL, but if I see that a friend is on to whom I want to talk, I can send email to their IM.

Vote for this issue on JIRA

Hi, This issue has been reopened on the JIRA but there has been no acknowlegement or comment from the lindens about this. The last time it was disabled it was a conscious decision. Feels like it's just been forotten due to the lack of comment.
If this issue is important to you, log into the JIRA and comment and vote for it. I agree that it is a complete pain to have it disabled and for over a week with no comment is frustrating.
Here's to friends! Myst

Yeah it's annoying, but there's no conspiracy. Look at the familiar timeline:
- Wednesday: update with new viewer - Later Wednesday: some problems, some get fixed - Thursday: everything goes to shit, the in-world friends list doesn't work at all for many people - later Thursday: "grid slowdown being addressed" per blog - a bit later Thursday: web page "friends online" get disabled, the in-world friends list mysteriously starts working again
It's just one more case of an SL subsystem being overly taxed and breaking outright under heavy load, and the usual fix of disabling some related feature until the truckloads of duct tape that are currently on back order come in so they can patch it up until the next update.

If you want to vote for this issue in JIRA, it is WEB-100. Instructions on JIRA and voting follow. The JIRA login page is at https://jira.secondlife.com/cas/login?service=https%3A%2F%2Fjira.secondlife.com%2Fsecure%2FDashboard.jspaJIRA is not a friendly UI, so here's some hints for voting: -- If you know the bug number (like WEB-100), then enter it in the "Quick Search" field in the upper right of the JIRA screen. -- When the bug description comes up, look on the panel on the left side of the screen for the section called "Operations" (probably the last section) -- The last item in that section should be "Voting". A single click there will register your vote. The page will change to indicate that you already have voted for this bug. The next time you log into Jira, you will see a set of links on the entry page like this: "My Unresolved Reported Issues | Votes " Click on the "Votes" part of the link and you will see the status of all issues you have voted for.

From: Colette Meiji if they are going to eventually get rid of it - now is as good a time as ever. That would be contrary to their blog posts a few months back about "my.secondlife.com" which promised more in-world functionality ported back to web pages (so much for a 3D web). From: someone A third party could do it of course, you'd just need all your freind's Avatar keys.
Ask the "Right to Bot" people. Don't give anyone any ideas, you'd be auto opt-in'ed to everyone's friends list .

From: Kitty Barnett That would be contrary to their blog posts a few months back about "my.secondlife.com" which promised more in-world functionality ported back to web pages (so much for a 3D web). . Silly Kitty , they dont always say what they mean by "More in world functionality" If they were meaning the friends list specifically theyd get rid of your freinds list IN WORLD in favor of the one on the website. ala account transactions history. Still you could be right of course. From: Kitty Barnett Don't give anyone any ideas, you'd be auto opt-in'ed to everyone's friends list . Ohh i think this one's already coming , sadly. The Right to Botters were all suportive of the ability to track people's online status and movements I recall from the automated burglary thread. Basically they can give back the ability to see all your freinds online hidden or not - and the ability to map all your freinds. yay.

I tried one of the suggestions in the issues report on JIRA. It suggested trying specific servers. I tried this one... https://secure-web10.secondlife.com/community/friends.php...and up popped my friends list for the first time in ages...cool!
