I'm new to SL and am finding it really hard to get to grips with the whole thing!! Is there a mentor out there that can help me?! Also can anyone recommend an overall beginners guide that's useful? I don't really find the SL help system that helpful? I've played Ultima Online for ages but don't seem to be able to get the hang of SL at all?!!! Everyone I seem to meet in game is also new?!!!! Thanks in advance!

"New Citizens Plaza" has alot of info for Noobs!
"The Ivory Tower" is a great place to learn to build and minipulate things (not people) lol
Teazers University offers orientaion classes (search educatutional events)

there's also a new SL manual that showed up in bookstores just before Christmas, but I honestly found everything I needed to learn just from exploring places online and searching events for classes.

Welcome aboard! and Good Luck!

Hi Doofus and welcome to Second Life. Yes, the learning curve can seem quite daunting and one wonders when it will possibly start levelling out even. But your enjoyment I'm sure will just get richer and richer. I had a quick look for a reference to a Help Plaza somebody posted earlier but can't quite find it. Time zone for me means being off-line for an hour or two now but sure someone else will pop in and help.
Don't give up .. it'll be the time of your life :)

Edit: heh heh, nice one Jax :)

Also, I found it useful to check people's profiles as you wander around. You can see how old people and can chat to the older ones. Most are quite helpful, if they're not too busy. Feel free to IM me if you're in-world at the same time as me.

And don't worry, you'll soon get the hang of it.

Welcome, Doofus! There's also an online guide here, written by Foolish Frost... it's pretty good, gives you a handy overview of SL along with tips and advice.

Welcome to SL Doo!

SL can be overwhelming, especially since there is no goal to the world. Just live, learn, and do stuff that makes you happy. If you have specific questions about things feel free to drop me an IM in game if I'm about. I'll do my best to confuse you *smirks*

Bop about and meet people.

About the best thing you can do is either find somebody interesting who's been around a while, or find somebody interesting who's only been around for a month more than you have. You might find out that there are fun people to hang out with, who can show you interesting stuff going on.

The infrastructure is provided by the tremendous work that Linden does. Without that, none of SL would exist. But when it comes to what is visible and most on-the-surface relevant to the Residents of SL, it's the other people that matter. SL is all about meeting people, either directly, or through the proxy of what they have built.

And, yeah, you can find sex clubs if you want 'em, but you don't need 'em.

I met one resident who came in and looked for some church places... and found 'em. She became quite involved in a number of those things... and said she wasn't even really fully conscious of all the "sex club" stuff.

"Popular places" in search is an utterly useless resource. Even searching classifieds or places requires you to be able to skim over all the highly advertised sex clubs and casinos if that's not your thing. But there's a lot else out there.
