Can any estate owners let me know what the procedure is for changing the name of an estate? I've waded through the Knowledge Base, and come up with two conflicting answers.. From: What's the difference between Estates and Private Regions We currently don't charge to change Estate names, but there's a $50 charge to change Region names. That doesn't say how to do it, it just says that it's free to do. From: Estate and Private Region Moving and Renaming Can I rename my Estate? Yes. There is a US$50 charge to rename your island. <snip> That says there's a $50 charge, and lists how to do it, but I believe it is inaccurate. The question is 'can I rename my estate' but the answer is 'this is how you rename your island'. Any enlightenment would be most welcome. -Atashi

Log into support. Submit a Ticket. Ticket type: Region Issue, Region Request: Region change. Region change: Rename.
Hope that helps!

Thanks Sue! Do you know if they charge for changing the Estate name, like it says on the one knowledge page, or if it's free, like they say on the other support page?

Region name changes are charged. If you are changing just the estate name, it is free. Generally, when I did it, I just sent an email to the concierge, and they had it taken care of within a couple days.

I recently had my Island moved to a new location, that was done entirely through the 'submit a ticket' service, I expect changing the name would be the same. Estate, Region, Island it's all rather complicated, but I think there would be no charge to change the Estate name, however Island and Region names changes would carry a fee. I have wondered why this is the case and the only conclusion I could come to was quite simply that because Region and Island names appear on the map, it would require a certain amount of adjustment to accomodate the requested change. Estate names do not appear on the map and therefore require no updating of the map. Of course I could be talking utter garbage here.

Thanks for the additional info Holyhell and Perre!
I definately don't want to change the name of the island / region (that'd ruin all the landmarks out there and confuse everyone). When I originally set it up, I used the same name for the island and estate, but now I'm thinking about adding a 2nd island, and if I do that I'd want to make the estate slightly different so there's no confusion when talking about the original island versus talking about the estate comprising both islands.
I'll try contacting someone at the concierge directly first, and if that doesn't work then I'll try the support ticket route.

I've been wondering about this myself. I thought landmarks would continue to work so long as the sim is in the same location on the grid but maybe I'm wrong. What exactly will it break when you change the name of a sim? Can anybody give concrete first-hand experience with this? Does it break Landmarks? Does it break Picks? Does it break Classifieds? Anything else that it breaks or other considerations?

Does it break Landmarks?
Does it break Picks?
Does it break Classifieds?
Anything else that it breaks or other considerations? I've already picked up landmarks that take me to places that no longer exist but used to be there (landmark wasn't broken), and also used landmarks to get to places I wanted to get to even though the landmark and the place had different names (name had change, LM had prior name).

Anything else that it breaks or other considerations? I don't honestly know 100%. When I look at a LM, or a pick, or classified, what you can see is the parcel name, followed by the region name, followed by the coordinates. Only the Lindens know what actual "location data" is stored within a LM / pick / classified. My suspicion however, based on what I observe when you use any of the above, is internally it stores Region Name and coordinates. Parcel names come and go, and you can rename a landmark of course, but when you doubleclick one and view the map, it's always Region Name and Coordinates. The only alternative would be global grid coordinates. If it's region name & coords, then changing the name of the region/island will break the landmarks, picks, and classifieds. However, moving the region would not break anything. If it's global grid coordinates, then renaming the region wouldn't break anything, but moving the region would. My money (if gambling weren't banned) would be Region Name & Coords, hence my assumption that changing the region name would break landmarks, picks, and classifieds. -Atashi

Just to be awkward, I'll place my bets on landmarks storing the locations using global coordinates, and only defaulting the visible name of the landmark to Region name plus local coordinates to make it more readable. Guess this is what would make most sense to me from an implementation point of view.
If anyone could confirm definatively either way what actually happens that would be much appreciated...
Classifieds arent so important. They can easly be updated. It's landmarks and picks which are the important ones.
Locations given in a URL are pretty safe to assume will be broken. Don't think I've seen one use global coordinates. Not sure what else might be affected by a region name change.

-Atashi Well, there is a terminology thing here... An Estate is what YOU use to call a group of private islands, or Regions. You can have an Estate of only one Region A Region is the name that shows up on the particular island, shows up in search, landmarks etc. Changing the region name is what costs $50. Does this help?
