Every now and then, I'm charged anywhere from one lindenbuck to twenty for "group liability". What exactly is that?

...wow, that was a short question, for a change. :)

Sometimes groups have to pay money. For example, if a group owned parcel has the "Show in Search > Places (L$30/week)" option enabled. The resulting charge is distributed across all group members who have the "pay liabilities" flag set in their assigned role.

Aha -- that explains it, since we do have a few group owned lands using that search flag. Thanks!

The Linden default group setting is for all groups members (i.e. the "everyone";) category get charged for group liabilities.

However, often it isn't appropriate for the entire membership to have to pay those charges, depending on what your group is. And members can belong to 25 groups, and certainly don't want to get hit with charges for all of them! If there are only a few members, that means your members are going to get hit with a higher charge than would a member of a very large group. Spread across 25 groups, that could be very expensive.

The recommendation many group leaders follow is to go into the goup settings, and change it so that only people in the "owner" category will pay these liabilities.

Another reason why that is a good idea is because if you leave it enabled for "everyone" then they will also share in the sale of the land. So if you sell you land that you deeded to the group, the proceeds will be split among ALL group members. In most cases, you don't want that to happen!

IM me in world if you need help changing the settings, or have more questions.

So where's the money go when a group has a signup fee? Does it get distributed to the group members or just the owners or to LL?

It gets distributed among the members who are also subject to the group liability. That is all members by default (or at least was the last time I created a group -- it may have changed), but you can change it. It's common to limit it to group owners only, or to owners and officers. You CAN'T remove it from group owners; owners always have all group rights and responsibilities.

There is one accounting setting checkoff; members who have it set pay all liabilities and get all dividends. Dividends are distributions from the proceeds of group income: land sales, group joining fees, and payments to group-owned objects; they get paid once a day. (Once upon a time, group income also included dwell payments.) Group liabilities come from parcel listing fees.

Hmm, I dont think this is default anymore it might of been, but I dont think it is now.

Last time i created a group, officers and owners paid liabilitys by default 'everyone' did not.
