If you use floating text on a prim near the border of your land, the chances vare excellent that the floating text will intrude into your neighbor's property ... not a good thing.
Is there a way to set parameters with llsettext or some other function in order to limit the visible distance of the floating text?

I don't think so. The best solution is to either use something other than floating text (which really isn't best for shops anyway), or to plant a false wall in from the boundary. Of course, this applies to any wall, not just sim boundaries.

Darn ... those solutions use up more prims and I'm close to maxed out on some of my properties.. I would like to use some floating text to describe items without messing up my neighbor's ... and i would like to offer a solution to one of my neighbors whose text is intruding on my property ...
I did put up a wall in that case, but it uses prims AND eats up a lot of my property and makes it unusable
I am reluctant to complain to them without offering a solution ... because i know that _they_ need to use the text as well.
Is there a Linden who might shed some light on this?

"I feel your pain". For shops, the best solution is to embed the text in the texture of the sales board. No prims, no space, no problems. Requires more forethought, though, and more trouble when changing prices. Another option for sales boards is text that gives info and prices, or say "click pay to see prices". Sure, less than ideal. Something you can consider is putting up some objects on that wall with floating text. Then go to your neighbor and talk about finding a good solution together. You might wait until they approach you, in which case you can be very cooperative. Good for you for trying to find solutions before raising the subject. BTW, if you both use a setback on your properties (not building any wall too close to the boundary), then there's no extra prim count. Yes, this can be impractical when using prefab buildings set to standard lot sizes, unfortunately, and yes it wastes space. And you still need an agreement about the widest text line for floating text. Good luck! Maybe someone else has a solution.

This is an ongoing issue that any mall designer also has to fight. Hover text shows through thin walls, and most vendors use some sort of hover text. The only solution is to move the vendor farther away from the wall, and/or make the wall thicker, so it doesn't poke through.

not always the most desirable option (compared to an actual custom distance setting), but maybe try setting different floating text colors and transparencies to help dampen the effect?? setting transparency to .3 or so on 'light-use' objects like radios and poseballs and such helps keep them from being so intrusive on the environment.

EVILLLLLLL Floating text

FLoating text requires a little planning. 1) If you are making a mall or shops you need 3 or 4 meters between the stalls. 2) Vendors should be asked to use "auto hide" floating text IF THEY MUST USE FLOATING TEXT. ** ** Vendors such as APEZ have the option to use auto hide where the hovertext is only active for a short time while the potential customer is looking an the items in a vendor. SHorty after a period of no use, the hovertext disappears. DEF a nice option. www.apez.biz if you want to know more about them.

of course, you could include an XYZtext prim in your vendors.. that could receive price information and display it dynamically. By doing this, you can put the name of the product in the texture of the vendor (on the picture) and you can still have a dynamically set price. (for the cost of one additional prim per vendor).
Nice thing about XYZtext is that you can have up to 5 characters on 1 prim (though for my uses I find that 3 characters is sufficient
if you want to see this concept in action.. go look at a lucky chair.. the expensive ones have the number of minutes, and the letter, spelled out using this technique.

Thank you everyone.. for the suggestions and the sympathy. For now, I guess I'll use up a prim as a screen to hime my neighbor's text ... better than a hassle ... there's more fun things to do!
