Hello. I have been in SL long enough to know what a sandbox is, but the other day I was pondering why they are here and who provides them. How big are sandboxes generally? Are they LL provided areas? Does someone pay for an entire piece of land where everyone is free to build and script? Generally, I see that the auto-return is set to 5 hours in sandboxes. I was wondering if this is 5 hours after an avatar arrives in a sandbox, or is auto-return activated between specific intervals during the day?

The majority of sandboxes are resident-owned, as part of a service to encourage people to visit the other things there - like the one by our Stratics HQ, for example.
Our auto-return is set to 90 minutes, and because it is a smallish sandbox, seems to work well as not too much clutter builds up.

Hi ya Faybot , Some sandboxes are owned by LL and some are owend by residents who just like to share space so that others can learn .. practice building or scripting . the auto return time is from the time you res an object X time after that the object will be returned to your lost and found some sand boxes are "cleared " every X hours ..so if you res an object 10 mins befor the " Clear " your obj will be returned 10 mins later . sand boxes that clear ever X hours normaly say that they do . Hope that helps ... have fun .. and pick up your junk wene you leave

Sandboxes are a great idea.
Unfortunately, the Linden sandboxes don't really work these days. They're too crowded and people dump crap everywhere and don't clean up after themselves.
There's a privately owned sandbox in a sim called 'Finance'. It's a great sandbox because you have to pay a very small fee to enter. This means that the kids who just fly around being a pain in the ass aren't prepared to pay to enter the sandbox just to bug somebody with questions like "Watcha makin?", "a/s/l?" and "wanna buy ma gun?"

The Linden owned sandboxes are okay, if you want something that is completely unpoliced. Unfortunately, this means that you have to deal with the bullies on the playground sort of mentality when you visit one of them.
Me, I prefer the privately owned sandbox at the Isle or Wyrms. It is a nice place and if the bully mentality goes too far, a guardian will stop 'em. I think it started because dragons (myself included) needed a place to take off our heads or assorted body parts and tweak them to match more our tastes. So, out of the kindness of their hearts, they heard the plea and filled the niche.
Also, the place is just a pretty place to visit too!

Explorers Rangeland has set aside a third of a sim for its sandbox. Anyone is welcome provided they observe the common sense rules.

Why is it that a public linden sandbox is set as one of the receiving areas for newbies that come off orientation island? I imagine it is the worst place for a lost and confused newbie to find themselves in.

That's because that's where all to bodies are buried.
