Why are island sims dearer to run?

It seems that owning a mainland sim costs $195 per month, but an island sim $295 per month. Why the difference, given that the land area is the same?

(I'm sure this has been asked before, but it's difficult to find the right thread.)

This is called "demand pricing" - that is, private islands have extra owner control and don't have adjacaent sims (which increases the work the sim has to do).

The machines are not more expensive to run, they are just more desirable for those reasons.

I had been wondering why people would pay $4000 at auction for a sim when they could have a new one for $2000 - then it struck me that $4000 + $200 p.m. eventually works out cheaper than $2000 + $300 p.m.
