Body shape bug?

I've noticed for the past few months that my client will forget the head size of other AVs and make it larger than it probably is supposed to be or just reverts it to the default size. This has become most noticeable on certain furry AVs. When the bug occurs i will see the human head poking through some of the smaller prim furry heads and only a relog corrects it. Has anyone else noticed this?

This is such a common occurance, it's got a fun SL nickname: being Ruthed. This means you momentarily return to the default avatar, Ruth. Ruth's head is probably bigger than the shape that came with the Furry AVs you spoke about. I looked it up in the knowlege base for you:

Q-13 * I TPed (teleported) and got turned into a woman - help change me back?

A-13 * Your wish is my command. You can either relog, or right-click on yourself, select Appearance, do NOT save anything, and click Close. You should be back to normal.

Q-14 * Why did I get turned into the really ugly woman?

A-14 * Good question! It's called being "Ruthed", because Ruth is the historical name of an early avatar form - not unlike having a great, great-grandmother. It happens when some info about you gets lost in a hiccup on the way from one place to another. This is rarer and easier to treat than hiccups, though.

One time, I got an accidental sex-change. Upon teleport I became a really ugly man in a dress. It frightened me, but all my friends assured me I looked like a woman to them. At least that's what they told me...

No this isn't the same. They aren't ruthed. They just have larger heads and only a relog of my client seems to correct it.

By being 'ruthed' you are not neccessarily a complete return to default. Sometimes as you say, it's the head size. I've seen scalps appear through flex hair many times. Yesterday at one login Bilbo was told his belly button was showing. Part of his shape had turned female. I could not see this but on subsequent login I could and an appearance toggle restored him to normal. My real life buddy suddenly went complete female the other day .. I managed to snapshot him before he reverted ;)

It's been a while now... Several times I noticed someone teleporting where I was and I definitely saw men appearing with a female shape and turning back to normal after a couple of seconds.

Another thing, some people appear smaller than they really are and after a couple of seconds they "grow up".

Ruthed is somewhat new to me but I know i've heard it before. Now I know what it means. I've called it the Carol Brady Phenomenon in the past...lol. Relogging fixes that problem unless the grid is having major issues. Just the prim head of an avatar going back to the original size I have never heard of at all. Unless, it is a building/editing bug or the prim head is no modify? *shrugs* Maybe it's a new bug to report for this version of the viewer.

ah, am I just plain lucky then? I've seen it a while now, far longer than a couple of client updates :(

I'm including it in my interpretation of Ruthing being a general term. Mebbe I'm wrong in doing so.

Another thing you could try is to update your graphics driver.

It appears that SL depends on your graphics driver for translating certain aspects of your avatar from the Appearance sliders into the actual 3D mesh, and if your driver does it wrong, then your avatar appears wrong to everyone else as well (!). I've experienced that first hand - with one of the earlier versions of NVidia ForceWare, you wind up shorter than you "should" be for your height setting; if you turn your height right down with that version, you become shorter than everyone else on the grid (!).
