Is it possible to run SL more than once at the same time on the same PC?

Yes. You must add "-multiple" to the command line that launches SL. Find your shortcut, edit it, and add -multiple.

Good Luck!

Most of us have problem running a single instance without it crashing regularly :(

lol, thanks!

The above suggestion works fine.

Now I need to work something else out, ambitious for a programming beginner (actually I now next to nothing!)

I want one avatar to follow another around, even teleporting to the same place if that can be achieved. I am thinking of having the second avatar echoing everything said by the first too. Does this sound possible? Ideas and suggestions (or even solutions) are welcome!

Not regularly, except you have a slow running computer.

i'm sure a script for that sort of thing exists, because i see avatars with little dragons and wierd spiders and such following them around. they are called pets. i have never seen a 'human pet' but perhaps YOU will be the one to invent it.

but you might look into those slave collars. that might jsut work. other than that, i dont' think that idea has come to fruition yet in SL.

A llSensorRepeat set to detect you, with the sensor event having an llGetAnim to find what animation the target avatar (you) is in, an llStartAnimation to make the clone emulate the target's animation, and an llMoveToTarget with a bit of offset to make the clone head towards a spot near the target avatar.

For another approach, you might want the check out programs created using libsecondlife code. libsecondlife.org is an url to get started investigating that line of thought.

I have this fancy new computer. It was running two sessions of SL just fine. No lag, no problems. I was thrilled, as that is one of the reasons I wanted the new computer in the first place.

Then after one of the SL upgrades, it stopped working. Will not run a second session. I got one to open very briefly the other day. It took forever to load, and the av crashed on rezz.

I've double-checked my shortcut icon that I use for startup, to make sure it has the -multiple added, and it does.
Here is what is in my target line: "C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -multiple
It is the same thing that has been there all along.

Anyone have any suggestions what is wrong, or how to fix it?

Thanks for the thoughts folks! I should add that I'd be happy to pay a reasonable price for a device, or for someone to make one to spec. Any further thoughts let me know!

Adding to this.

If you have two cores in your processor, setting the two client's affinity to individual processors boost the preformance, it's like using two computers with minimal preformance degradation.

It is dual-core, but that goes beyond my knowledge!
I'll have to have hubby take a look at it.

I just wonder why it used to work and now it doesn't?

Try IMing Pete Fats. Back in 1.2, he had 6 or 7 clones that would follow him around. He probably still has the script.

As far as teleporting to the same location, that is going to be dificult w/o some sort of client hack.

I finally found a solution that works great for me! Runs two sessions beautifully now!

Here is the blog article and directions:

As the dual core processors are becoming mainstream, many of you are eyeing (or have purchased already) one of the shiny new dual core offerings from AMD or Intel, with perhaps hope of getting your framerates up to snuff in SL. (For those of you playing at home, framerate is more dependent on the processor speed of your box rather than the video card; this is opposite of most graphics intensive programs).

Anywho, if you're like me, and you get SL all set up on your new rig, you might be disappointed to notice only a slight increase in frames per second. Well, that sucks; a couple hundred dollars at least down the drain!

Not so fast, dear readers! All is not lost. Due to a bug in either SL or Windows XP, SL doesn't recognize the second core right away. So, upon loading up SL, you have to go through this dance:

1) when SL is running, ctrl-alt-del and go to the running processes.
2) right click on secondlife.exe and go to "set affinity".
3) uncheck processor 0 and click okay.
4) repeat step two, but this time check processor 0 again.
5) Close the task window.

Et voila, faster frame rates. Depending on the situation, you could double your fps (dual cores, after all). AMD has a patch out on their website, although I cannot tell if it works or not; I've got an Intel chipset.

My shortcut does not have an edit option - nor does the main file cache on the hard drive. Frgive me if I'm being thick.

Right click on your shortcut. Select "Properties"
You can then put the following in the target line:
"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -multiple
