i measured out 4meter x 4 meters in my lawn yesterday, to see how big a 16sqm plot should be in real life its HUGE you could fit a couch, loveseat, tv, etc in that thing in SL it seems so much smaller plus in RL i fit ALOT more prims into it that is a photo of 16 sq meters i swear in SL it seems like its only 1/10th that big! Converted to feet, 4 meters is 13.12 feet by 13.12 feet That is 172Sq Feet in 16SqMeters does it seem that big in SL to you? 16Meters by 16Meters would be 256 Sq Meters, and 2755 Square Feet Much bigger then most homes but you all know how small a 512 feels! a 512 is 5510 Square Feet i call sheneigins

From: someone i call sheneigins From: Protagoras Man is the measure of all things The problem stems from the first time humanoid avatars were added into SL during the version 0.x days. The avatar meshes were not properly scaled so that they are considerably bigger than normal humans. This makes a 4m by 4m space appear far smaller than it does in the real world. Put another way, if they scaled avatars to the size of ants instead, 4m would seem huge. There is no other "standard" by which to compass SL.

From: poopmaster Oh i measured out 4meter x 4 meters in my lawn yesterday, to see how big a 16sqm plot should be ... in SL it seems so much smaller That's about the size of my bedroom... but then again, most avatars in SL are about 8ft tall so I guess it all scales. Broccoli

use a tiny avatar.
your space will seem a LOT bigger! lots more tiny furniture will fit into it.
what roamed the grid before human avatars? um... primate avatars? :X lindenlapithicus? probably disembodied spirits.
as for the ORIGINAL question.....
who owns the land the canals are on? if it is private land, someone might have terraformed something. (no, i have no clue how they might've been able to terraform INTO your land, unless you have some weird settings.) if its government (linden preserve) land, you could take it up with them.
also, prims have what is known as 'prim drift.' the house probably didnt change size, but are you sure it didn't 'roam' over closer to the canal?

From: Brenda Connolly Uhmmm, Who (or what) roamed Second Life before the Humanoids arrived? Primitar was the current avatar's predecessor. Only LL employees were able to log in at all during that era and and they terraformed the landscape with guns. Sounds like a fancy explanation for griefing to me.

If your land is on a private island, it is possible that the owner or estate manager raised the water levels, which might make it appear that the land had shrunk.

How high is the water level? In most sims, the default is for the water table to be at 20M. If the sim owner tweaked that, it may have "made the creeks rise" in the whole sim. "Tide's coming in!"

Ahhh, maybe SL is getting more realistic and it's normal land erosion caused by the rippling waves

Global warming has come to SL. If you go to the far North of the Map screen, you won't find any glaciers. Looks like the extra water landed on your sim

if you're on an estate, maybe the estate owner edited the terraform. "smoothing" the land (if surrounded by water) would likely make the land area smaller

hmmmm...

i would assume that since the canals are within the lot lines that the canals belong to the lot owner ( they are to be kept free to allow water travel ). as far as the house drifting no...it up to the water edge on one side an hanging over the water a little on the other now.....before i had about 3 meters of land between the house an the canal on both sides . guess i will rez a new house tonite to see if it resizes . also if someone knows ....could u tell me how to stretch the land......is there a way to do it like say .....a rug ????

The average avatar is about 6'6 according to measurements I've taken using the build feature (standing my av next to a prim and sizing it to my av so on and so forth, you get the idea). Furniture is often built oversized.

Add to that Most people in SL are 6.6 to 7 feet tall, and it won't look so big anymore. Double the size of the person standing on the patch and the Lot will be even smaller. Gotta call shenanigins right back at you. Angel.
