Dang. I should have bet more folks about this happening, and with USDs not L$s. /me hits head on desk repeatedly.

SLIBM, here we come!

Oh, sorry, Strife. My question is: Does anyone else think IBM is the likely buyer of LL and what does that mean for Second Life?

IBM has a huge presence in SL but I think they'd have to have a few screws loose if they were serious about buying SL. Let's face it, the code for SL needs a major rewrite from the ground up. More likely they're gonna experiment with 'closed in-house' virtual worlds systems that can be sold on to academic and corporate buyers.

Could just be a temporary measure so thet can sell cheapo systems to businesses that want to do extensive 3D modelling. Or even knock-off 'Industrial Light and Magic' systems as an 'out-of-the-box' product for mid to low budget film studios..

He's talking about the kinds of computers a company like ILM might use for development work, for the front end anyway.

exactly.... they buy in blank systems and then set them up with software, etc. That's where racks of ready-made servers with gaming grafix chips would be a real winner. At least that's how it looks to me tho I may have misread things.

The use and drive for the move by IBM has been detailed in association with secondlife and other systems already:

Wow that is really cool.

I would love to see how SL would run on a bunch of these.

That last link mentions its excellent abilities to handles multiple messaging and physics simulations.

It is like IBM is sort of saying "Hey we got what you need! And we are right here in your world!"

Without actually saying "hey buy these!"

It definitely appears they are positioning themselves as a technical improvement solution.

Makes me wonder if LL has taken a close look at these and what they think of them.
