While checking out the sign farm across the way from my place I discovered one of the plots must have reverted to Linden land but it has one of those red "for sale" signs on it. I also noticed some basic prims and tried creating one of my own. It worked, then I deleted it. Is the online help the best avenue to ask the Lindens to turn on the autoreturn for objects? It's only one of the signs at this point, but any progress in improving the view is still progress.

from the knowledge base:

How do I address a concern with Linden owned land?
Please detail the concern to support@secondlife.com with the tag, [Linden Land], in the topic. Always include the exact location that needs to be investigated by including the region name and grid location. Issues that can be addressed like this would include;
* Parcel settings, such as littered plots without auto return enabled or plots that should have scripts enabled, etc.
* Parcel encroachment, when the offending item, usually trees and grasses, are owned by Governor Linden.
* Land that is owned by Governor Linden that appears to have been abandoned by a resident.
* Broken Linden content such as phantom roadway or malfunctioning trains, etc.

Do what Feras said. But don't expect a fast response. I've been waiting for a couple of weeks for them to enable autoreturn on several lots I've reported.

If you're concerned that other people might come along in the meantime and put obscene signs or illegal pyramid objects or other junk on the lot, you could maybe put a tree or flowers or something there to use up the prim count.

Thanks, Feras* and Annabelle. I like the idea of "treeing" it but anything I put there would hang over into the legitimately owned lots it borders. Maybe I'll find some greenery that fits. Ferns perhaps.

Now that you mention it I think there was one of those pyramids on yet another adjacent 16m lot. Next time I'm in-world I'll check out the situation more thoroughly.

Again, thanks for your suggestions. I'll also probably look into that Arbor group.
