I have searched the forums but couldn't find anything. Has anyone used SmartVid Video File Convertor to convert avi's to quicktime to be downloaded in SL for viewing inword? Are there any good tutorials or any advice anyone can give me on how to show QT movies?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

QuickTime videos are not 'downloaded' to SL. (there's no place to 'store' them in SL) They are 'streamed'. (and NO, i'm not just being geeky-there's a real difference.)
There are 3 issues here:
1. The Quicktime player if free from Apple.com. If it will play your AVI, then the AVI is already viewable in SL. If its not playable, then 'yes', you'll need to convert it to QT. I've not used the specific software you ask about.
2. ONce the file is QT playable, it needs to be STREAMABLE...EXPORT it from QT, and in OPTIONS - click on STREAMING - then check 'set Stream ON...'
3. the result is a file which can be sent into SL. Now you need to STREAM it. This requires you to use something like a web site, or a program like VLC to act as a server. there are also web based services that will rent you server time to stream videos so your PC doesn't have to stay on all the time.
There are some tutorials on this in the Knowledge Base.

Oh thank you so much Sterling, will do more research. I had the impression they were uploadable like wav's. I appreciate the correction and the info . Baskets of hugs and rose petal showers, Berfie

I use this program to move between . wmv and .mov. http://www.avsmedia.com/VideoTools/index.aspxCosts $30 and includes video editing features I use sometimes. Works fine and has adequate instructions. Don't know about Smart vid. On the web site I see last update as Nov 2000. Os suppport: win 95 98 Me. Don't see Win XP. Sounds to me like it might be obsolete. If you stream, you will pay for bandwidth. That may not be cheap. Your ISP may not let you stream from home. I use Mediamax (Google it) for such services. TM
