Other than hiding it on your own display using Edit -> Preferences -> General tab, I doubt there's a way to turn it off for other people regardless of their settings. --Hugsy _____________________

Can't do it, no. And a good thing, as Griefers would have a field day with that.
Seeing the name and/or group tags above your head or not is a client-side choice. You can't force others not to see your tag. Some combat systems displace your actual position and your camera position by so much that you *appear* to not be completely invisible. But wherever your avatar actually is, your tag will be over their head. _____________________
Sorry, LL won't let me tell you where I sell my textures and where I offer my services as a sim builder. Ask me in-world.

reagarding your statement that this is a good thing..I understand what you mean but i think there are many other useful reasons someone might want to do this that has nothing to do with grief'in.

Being able to operate in SL as a completely invisible entity is one of those things. While a few people would use it quite responsibly, far more would use it as a griefing tool. That is why the system doesn't generally permit this to happen. _____________________

Such as? We have been developing a Travel Bug game to compliment our current Geocaching game ( see slgeocaching.com) where our 500+ members participate in a metaverse hunt where they are tracked and tagged. Each time a travel bug is tagged a clue is presented which populates a Travel Bug Bingo card and once that card is filled it makes a riddle and whom ever answeres the riddle first recieves Lindens. The ability to be visible or not can be strategic depending on if this is done in teams or not. Thats the readers digest version... |

Hm.. This is either a trick question or a scary one.. meaning....My avatar has been griefed, forced raped, thrown into a volcano and poisened by a vampire bite - none of which come close to even a paper cut in Real Life. I guess I hadn't considered the fact that there are those here in SL who take this world a bit more serious then I. And I agree that abuse of this kind can be a pain and make the SL experience less enjoyable...for some. |

clarification: Your nametag is attached to your Agent, not your Avatar.
The Agent is an invisible, phsyical oval prim, that is your "hitbox" in SL. Animations can displace your avatar in relation to your agent.. but the nametag is almost uniformly attached to the top of the agent (the voice dot seems to be, as well). Certain bugs in SL can cause the nametag to vanish, just as they can cause avatars not to render. Actual, intentional, exploits for making the agent (or the associated nametag) are few, and seem to be difficult to reproduce. Simple animation tricks can be used to offset the Avatar's location, so that they appear to have no nametag... however the avatar ends up being phantom as well. (useful in combat, since you have to shoot the agent *NOT THE AVATAR* in order to register a "hit".) some of the "Cloaking device" tricks, are simply animations that fold up the avatar and shove it 10m downward. _____________________

Some pay extra for that stuff anyway... Have you really been in SL for over a year without realizing that people actually have large RL$ invested here? Physical damage to your RL body is not the only kind of RL damage that can be done. |

You can simulate what you wish to achieve.
The name tag hovers above your Agent, but you camera is independent of this. I have several gizmos that allow me (or rather my camera) to travel almost anywhere inside a sim, while leaving the Agent and the tag behind. I am invisible (as cameras are), but I can still hear conversations hundreds of metres away by having a camera follower that relays chat, and through which I can talk. I only use these devices for legitimate estate use, but I can see how they can be misused. Rock |

A long time ago, and it may not be completely correct, I read that it was against TOS to be 100% invisible.
If it's for private use, you should be ok. If you're intending to sell your device, check the TOS or ask a Linden or two. |

Sounds like spying, which I personally don't ever count as legitimate...unless large sums of money somehow find there way into my account.... *cough* _____________________
