Hi all. Getting the hang of building in SL now but one thing eludes me. I want to create a sign for a shop but see no text editing tools in the create tools?

Any pointers please?

Many thanks :)

I'd say the simplest way to do this is to create a texture and upload it, providing you don't need the sign to change regularly.

If you don't already have good graphics software to do this, you can download The Gimp for free.

Either make the background an alpha channel (think "transparent";) and use the text tool to type in your text, choose the font, color, size, etc., and save it as a TGA file, or give it a pattern such as woodgrain or whatever for the background, with text in front of it.

After saving the file, upload it as a texture (this will cost you 10 L$) and put the texture on a prim.

Instant sign.

You need to apply a texture that you have created outside of SL, and then upload into SL. Most use Photoshop or Pain Shop Pro, but any graphics editing package will of course suffice. There are also some logo sites available on the web should you not be too comfy with using those packages.

I do mine in Adobe Photoshop and/or Corel Photopaint, then Import them. My favorite ones are the signs that look like Cast Bronze, or Engraved Marble. I can do Both.

It's something i have Missed in the Build tools though, some kind of Text Editor that could Overlay Text onto Textures using various fonts, and Basic effects. I wonder if LL is looking into that as a Possible Feature?

If you need to change a text regularly it might be best to use floating text.
