heyas;
suppose somebody joined 2l. and hung around, and did stuff, and made stuff, and sold stuff... then left 2l. for whatever reason.
okay, first, how DO you leave 2l? i presume there is a process where you quit paying your account and land tier fees, and declare that you're not keeping your account, etc etc.
if you do that (or you vanish and your account goes into arrears), what happens to the land you own? the prims on the land you own? what happens to the stuff you've built, and the vendors in the stores? if you DO leave, and you have a vendor in a mall (and the lease hasn't run out or whatever), and people are buying your stuff after your account is closed... where do the lindens go? what if you have done joint ventures with people and have the sale proceeds split between you?
would items created by no-longer-existant accounts ever eventually become full-perm freebies? that doesnt seem likely, but i did get that lovely black cat furry avatar, and so many people have commented on how good it is, i thought i would send an im to the creator and ask if s/he had a store or something that sold other furry avatars and such, that i could give out to people who asked. however, when i tried to send the im... apparently the person doesn't exist any more.
so it set me to wondering.... what happens to your stuff when you leave?

Oh, your land will be reclaimed and so forth and the stuff on it returned if you stop paying. But as for the things you made and sold to others, or left on land where they are welcome- I'm pretty sure these are essentially permanent. That's the whole point of a persistent world. So... you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave.

so it set me to wondering.... what happens to your stuff when you leave? Little SL oompa loompa's come out of the ground and begin eating your prims. They then sweep up any leftover particle scripts into burlap bags and hammer the ground back into the default ground shape. I saw this happen once and it is quite scary actually. no? you're not buying that? fine LL'ers come and put your land back for sale and throw your stuff into a circular file. I think they wear gorilla suits too. *the above post is purely speculation based on half-truths*

From: Desmond Shang you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave. There is a menu choice for "checking out" indeed. I have never tried it, I love my SL too much to commit suicide. Objects you sold should not disappear, else a lot of people would get very angry. But the land??? Reclaimed???? Resold??? By whom??? At what price??? It cannot be left dormant for ever. Otherwise in 10 years SL will be full of unusable lots of lands because the owner "died"...

1: If you were Premium, and you just vanish without warning, your account eventually is declared in default, LL seizes all your mainland property, deletes the content on that land, and resells the land, keeping any profits. A Premium account that defaults gets it's inventory wiped, after a certain period of time, and after another period of time the account itself is terminated, and may not be revived.
2: Any prims or in-world creations that were NOT on your land remain in-world, and continue to function. This even applies to vendors for products, which may continue to recieve money and to dispense your goods. If you were not actually banned, and did not explicitly cancel your account, then you might at some point return and find that you have a wad of L$ waiting for you. If you were banned, or if the Premium account defaulted and was deleted later, then L$ paid to your vendors and objects just go away. No one gets the money, but the customer still gets the goods. Profit split vendors would continue to send the split to the other party, if they remain in SL. (Note that if you have a server-based vending system, and if the servers were on your land and get deleted after you leave, that the vendors would cease functioning.)
3: If you tier down to Basic in an orderly fashion and sell off all your land before you leave, and if your account wasn't banned, or if the account always was Basic, then any inventory and in-world items remain forever, unless they are on someone else's land and get returned. There is an option on the website that allows you to intentionally go from Premium to Basic. Sell your mainland properties before you do this, or you give the land, free, to LL.
4: If you owned land on a private sim or were reniting an apartment or space in a mall, then the sim owner or property owner would eventually consider you in default on those payments, and could seize your land and return your prims. Most private island purchase contracts and apartment rentals clearly spell out what happens when you stop paying maintenance fees. But if they choose to leave your stuff there, it remains, and still works.
5: When you leave SL, you should sell your land, tier down to Basic, terminate any leases or the like, and clean up after yourself. Cash out, and then just go. If you ever change your mind, the account and your remaining inventory will be there for you.
6: You also have the option to tell LL you really want to eliminate/terminate an account. This wipes inventory, forfeits any land, and after a 30-day period the account can never again be reactivated. That name 'dies', in SL, never to reappear. But as in all the above notes, anything someone else got from you coninues to exist.
7: The perms on stuff a departed Player created never change. They don't ever become freebies. They still retain IP rights to their work, even if they never intend to go into SL again, or were banned from SL.

From: Desmond Shang So... you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave. As long there's pink champagne on ice, then I don't care...

I saw this happen once and it is quite scary actually. sounds eerily like the graveyard daemons in snow crash. i just didn't picture them as oompa loompas when i read it. xD From: someone So... you can check out any time you like, but you can never leave. if you close your account, your inventory and lindens are erased and you will disappear from the search >> people list. does that count as leaving? getting permabanned has the same effect. despite your absence, anybody with prims/objects you created will still see your name as creator and be able to click through to your profile - as those huge prims testify.
