hello all, I am just over 30 days old and have come across a problem with my neighbor. (I have not discussed a resolution with them because I wanted to get some feedback, to see if I have a valid claim and what a possible resolution would be.)
I own land, 2560sq. m. to be exact, and my neighbor has put up these floating light things on his parcel.( I assume to lure people to his shop or land). My problem is that it is leaking, quite a bit, onto my land and covering up my homes and signs that I have for rent. I have no idea if lights can be adjusted away from my property. What is the standard protocol for handling such an issue: 1.contact neighbor and ask them nicely to remove lights or focus in another direction 2.contact Linden and get them to take action????? 3.Do I have the right to ask them to remove or refocus lights?? 4.If they refuse, what are my next options.
land is at: Moolmangcho (50,162)
Thanks for your ideas.

It is impossible to 'aim' a light, if it's done with the "Local Lighting" effect. Those are all omnidirectioinal, and walls and other solid objects don't block the light. If it's a stream of fullbright particles, he may be able to aim it a bit, but I doubt it.
Ask him, politely, to move the lights farther from your property line.
If he refuses to cooperate, contact a Linden Liason and see if they can help you. You are within your rights to ask that light and particle effects that harm your enjoyment of your property be removed.

To my knowledge, no, there is no way to focus lights. Though the radius of teh glow can be adjusted.
Step one is always to speak civily to your neighbor to resolve the issue. He/she might not even be aware of the effect on your property.
If you do not recieve a response within a decent time (holidays here, so I'd give a few weeks really), or if your nieghbor refuses to adjust/move, then your recourse is to file an Abuse Report (found on the Help menu). The form is fairly self explanitory, though if you find you need help, IM Live Help, or feel free to IM myself if I'm on and I'll gladly assist.
You have the right to request remove due to a violation of the Community Standards reguarding "disturbing the peace". Namely yours. However, since you may be living next to this neighbor for some time, it is always best to avoid issues of conflict if at all possible.
Hope that answers (I'm quite tired atm) and good luck at resolving the issue.
~Jessy

Sounds more like "Particles" or "Ghost Lights".. there was a thread about that not too long ago.
Short version.. contact your neighbor.. tell him you're not angry, but you have a problem. Invite him onto your land so he can see the problem, and perhaps you two can come to some kind of an agreement.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't think putting up with the neighbor's lights or particles for a few WEEKS is in bounds. It's not like the neighbor doesn't know what his setup is doing. I would feel justified in AR'ing within 2 days. Again, just my opinion, and maybe I spend too much time in world. I'd sign this, but I'm an alt of an account that is permabanned from this forum for criticizing LL.

I said the "weeks" due to the fact that some people take extended holidays about this time and the neighbor might not even log in over teh next few weeks. Might not even be near a computer in the next few weeks. *shrugs*
And starting a war with your neighbor in SL is never a good thing. Ask all those that have and the results. Much easier to bend a bit to resolve the issue.

~Jessy It is possible to give the appearance that light is being aimed, but it is in an illusion. By creating a lighting object and using a near-transparent cone shaped prim as a "beam" of sorts, tinged yellow for example, this give the impression of a beam of light - clubs often use this to create the illusion of spotlights. If this is the case, then your neighbour is actually invading your land with a prim, and I'm sure the Lindens can help. Of course, the best thing to do is to discuss it with your neighbour - they may well be horrified at having caused you inconvenience and rectify the problem immediately anyway

I'd sign this, but I'm an alt of an account that is permabanned from this forum for criticizing LL. I think you've missed the point of what Jess was saying. Not everyone lives their entire lives on SL - some of us go for weeks at a time without logging on, so Earl's neighbour might not get his messages until after Christmas. Earl, try to contact your neighbour but if you haven't had a response by Jan 6th, then contact linden. I'd contact a Linden Liason first before ARing, as it's not really abuse if it's not deliberate and they don't know they're doing it. To the best of my knowledge there is nothing in the terms of service that specifically mentions lighting/particle effects leaking onto other people's land, so because the TOS are so vague it's hard to know what constitutes abuse and what doesn't some times. You didn't mention how big your neighbours land is. If it's huge, say 32000sqm+ then they may have no idea that their effects are straying beyond their property lines, as they may never happen to walk anywhere near your property. Likewise, if they own multiple lands, they may never visit this property in question, so Foo's statement that "It's not like the neighbor doesn't know what his setup is doing" is unhelpful and inaccurate ate at best - there is plenty of scope for the neighbour to now know what his setup is doing.

Earl, try to contact your neighbour but if you haven't had a response by Jan 6th, then contact linden. Equally though, it's not Earl's fault if his neighbour doesn't login to SL. I think it'd be reasonable to ask LL to return or move the lights after a reasonable amount of time. At the same time on the encroachment topic, anyone have any tips for what to do when sharing land with a brilliant builder who's gradually claiming more and more of the space on the grounds that, hey, of course they should have it because they'll do good things with it, while you're still building beginner's junk out of plywood?
