Hello all, just wanted to introduce myself - I have been playing for a couple of weeks now, and was wondering if you guys could help me out with a question: In other virtual worlds I have played in, they have been far more social, meeting new people when going out for hunts with them, or joining societies or guilds and making friends – I cant find anything like that here – am I missing something? What is there to do socially other than wandering around aimlessly shopping? I did see a Jazz club, but couldn’t get near it due to lag… Thanks in advance for any help and comments

You should join some groups Bring up the find, select groups and browse through them for something that interests you. Some you can join using a button on that page, others you need to IM someone.
Groups with maybe 5 or less members arnt usually looking for members as they are often just someones family, but groups with many members are always on the lookout for more.
Without knowing what interests you, its hard to say which to join. If you like fantasy I recommend "elf circle".
The larger groups often host events which they use group IM's to announce, such as tournements, classes etc and these are good ways to meet others in the group. They often own one or more sims as well where members hang out.

Hi Fraggle, as has been explained, try a search on something whether an activity or locality of your interest. I know of a couple of pubs if you're of that frame of mind where the locals are a fairly easy going crowd ... well .. one of them is territorially Welsh

Use search ....under Groups..type in any keyword and you will get all kinds of groups you can join. Under places type in a keyword of interest and you will find a lot of places to visit and make friends. Also look in people's profile for thier Picks. They will point you to all kinds of great places.

Hi Fraggle
What everyone else said.
You could also look for Events - joining a class or discussion group is a good way to get to know people. You don't even have to be in-world to search: go to Community on this website and select Events from the sidebar menu.

Morwen. hmm question: in the TOS that stipulates naming names .. does this only refer to derogatory comments? <holds breath> Three Lions on Bourton Island, gets a little laggy when everyone turns up and dances but a good hardcore of membership. Created by a UK resident follows very british pub style ..... Taff's Bar, can't remember which sim, pro-Welsh but with a sense of humour - I commented on the free t-shirt being anti-english laughingly and owner ran off a modified one immediately .. that's what I call customer care <let's out air> phew!

Welcome to SL!
Events under the Discussion and Education listings are great for meeting people with similar interests.
Once you start making friends and joining groups, it can really snowball so enjoy this peaceful time-you'll be swamped with IMs soon enough. lol

Thanks for the responces so far! I thought I had to be invited to groups, so good to know I can just send a message asking if ok to join... Am i allowed to join more than one? I will check out the events too, although so far they have all been about camping (not 100% sure what that is, but it seems very boring sitting in a chair or scrubbing the floor lol!) or sexy stuff (wife would hurt me)...

Just to give equal time, if you prefer your Pubs to be on the Irish side, I recommend the Dublin and West of Ireland Sims. Just be warned Dublin gets laggy, and will crash.

Pubs are good, couldn't care less which type there were IRL providing they sell lots and lots of beer... I assume in second life its sitting around chatting? Or is there something I am missing? (not that chatting is a bad thing - I miss talking to people in game atm )

(not that chatting is a bad thing - I miss talking to people in game atm ) Yes chatting isa major component of SL Publife as well as listening to the music streams. Many of the DJ's are quite good, some have a good following. Dancing is also a big part, and a lot of places will have contests where you can win Linden's and a stream in live performances. You can't go wrong pub crawling, you'll make friends, get tips on interesting places and get a lot of basic questions answered. Most pub goers are very friendly. the only drawback is the lag in the more popular places.

From: Fraggle Mayo In other virtual worlds I have played in, they have been far more social... I'm still trying to figure out how you managed to avoid being social. I'm not the most social person in RL, but in SL I'm constantly adding new friends without any effort. Just last night, I went to visit a favorite pub that I hadn't been to in awhile and it was gone. But I bought something at the store that had taken its place, and the owner and I got to chatting. And chatting and chatting. We covered politics, spirituality and the wonders of SL and by the end of the evening were Friends. So don't hesitate to chat people up every chance you get. You just never know what can happen.

These two things are your best tools: Search -> Events, and Click -> Profile.
Clubs and Bars holding events are a good place to meet people. Be prepared to do some hopping around; when I am looking for events, I usually have to teleport through at least five or so before I find one I like. Nothing against the strip clubs, but the events that do not feature strippers are typically more friendly in which to just socialize. There are quite a few classes and discussion groups also. If online flirting is your thing, there is usually at least one or two singles events a day. If you are shy, you may want to go to events with some sort of forced socializing, like a game. (I once went to a singles dance in which I was paired up with partners at random, switching every fifteen minutes. That event was one of the most fun I have attended in Second Life.)
When you meet people, check their profiles to see what groups they are in. If a group name interests you, ask the person about it. (Asking a person about something in his or her profile is a great icebreaker, by the way.) In my experience, people who belong to quite a few groups are usually friendly people; also, most people with a birthdate earlier than 2007 seem to be friendly and helpful to newcomers.
Set your Profile information. That helps people approach you.
When you meet people with whom you want to stay in touch, remember to use the Friends listing. Sometimes when I can't find anything else to do, I will look at my friends list, and IM a few to ask what is fun going on.
People often advertise groups in Search -> Classifieds, too. That might be another place to look.
If all else fails, IM me while I'm online, and ask me what is fun that's going on.

Welcome to SL! I think exploring and deciding what one likes is probably the best way. A good way to find places to explore is Snapzilla, at sluniverse.com. You can see pictures others have made in various locations and TP directly there if the sim is open.
Striking up conversations leads to friendships, but you may have more in common with people in areas that are focused on things you are interested in, like, say, cars, role play, sci-fi, dancing, live music, games, flying, pixel bashing, sumo wrestling, distopian living, art, ecology, books, learning, machinima, etc.

I am starting to think I missed something lol The live streaming music would be a good thing, so will search out some pubs tonight I am a bit of a sci-fi freak so bound to be some groups I can apply to... I am also looking to invest here (once i have a clue what I am doing) so hopefully there will be some groups that are good for business discussions. I must admit, you guys have already proved yourselves right, I ask for help and get a load of responces! Many thanks

Search by your favorite show.ie Star Trek, B5, Star Wars and you will find some nice places. Use both the groups and places tabs.

What is there to do socially other than wandering around aimlessly shopping? I did see a Jazz club, but couldn’t get near it due to lag… Thanks in advance for any help and comments I also came from other MMOGs but for me it was opposite- I had to adjust to being a social player and had to learn to chat again coming here. I'm still overwhelmed at times at peoples willingness to chat, something I wasnt used to in other MMOGs where the chatting was mostly people trying to upstage each other in some way. Here you can actually find alot of people that you can actually relate to- instead of just a niche that you try to relate to. Many people log in specificly to chat, especially around the orientation areas. You still have your moron "who the hell is this guy" know-it-alls (that usually know nothing) who try to jump into any conversation they over hear but there are much fewer of them. There are some clubs that are so good you practicly have to pay them to camp there and are not over crowded because they don't have any free linden systems just good music so you can find clubs that don't lag and that are way better music than the big ones on the popular search you just have to look but they're out there.
