Permissions for large builds in a rezzer

What I'm talking about: I have purchased some buildings that are too large to be linked all in one piece. To assist with rezzing and placement of these large builds, the creator puts the building in a rezzer (like Rez-Faux).

The question: How common is it for creators to sell these with permissions set to no-copy? And how does that work?

Why I ask: All the rezzer buildings I've purchased are copy/no-transfer, and I was under the impression they kind of had to be... otherwise the rezzer becomes useless after a single use. But a friend of mine has recently started selling a rezzer building that is transfer/no-copy. I see there is already one "rezzed badly, building destroyed" complaint on his SLX listing, which seems to confirm that this is a bad way to offer such an item. If nothing else, I would consider this a customer-service nightmare.

My friend often asks my advice on his products, and has done so again with this one. I planned to discuss the permissions issue with him, but I thought I would ask you guys first so I can have a better understanding of the issues involved.

I've used a couple different rezzers to package up builds and there wasn't anything to prevent me from setting the permissions no-copy. But the documentation that came with them (and i'm thinking of rez-faux specifically) stated that setting them no-copy is a bad idea for exactly the reasons your friend is running into.

Exactly, bad marketing by someone who doesnt totally understand the situation. The reason they're setting it to no copy is because they want you to pay for each building you buy. However, if they were adamant about doing so, then they should sell the item with a rezzing service too, and rez and place the building as part of the sale, or sell it in pieces, whatever, anything but a rezzer. Either that, or just make it copyable so that one could de-rez and try again. I once saw someone rez the building 4 or 5 times before they got the location right.

This is correct. I personally prefer copy/no-trans, but he has chosen to do trans/no-copy for almost everything he sells. I can't really argue with his choice, as it has worked very well for him and his business.

But he does listen to me, and he now sells a few items in both ways (c/nt and t/nc). For this reason, and because I know he's already getting customer complaints, I believe he'll be open to changing the permissions on this build. Now if I can just convince him of the importance of mod in some cases... :)

For a house, it is not a good idea to have no copy, too many problems can go wrong! The author of Rez-Faux, Lex Neva's web site explains well:

You can still physically do it nocopy/trans - it's just that there are risks with using the rezzer (or anything, for people who have no clue how to do things like select all the pieces of an object and pull a few sliders).

Right, but even for people who do have a clue, there are risks the rez can fail due to circumstances beyond their control. SL ensures their is only one of a no copy item and if the rez fails the object is lost forever. The problem of lost no copy items rezzed from inventory that vanish instead of rezzing is similar example.

I can't imagine I would sell large buildings in a rezzer as no-copy, for all kinds of reasons. SL is too flakey. I need to be able to say "It's ok, you can place a new copy out" and I can't imagine how many IMs I would get if people didn't know they were ok with copies for failed rezzes.

Selling copyable may seem like you're giving things away, and yes, there are people out there making money ten times over on a house they bought once renting out copies etc. But- I see a lot of people buying a handful of houses- landlords looking for variety I expect, and nothing quite promotes your product like an island full of your homes.

None of this is directly relevant to issues with rezzer boxes, but it might be something to pass on to the friend who is wary of selling with copy permissions, as my small experience.

Thanks so much Ace, I'm sure my friend will value the opinion of a successful businessperson like you. :)
