I have been struggling with something for the last 2 days and coming to the conclusion that I'm trying to do something that just can't be done.
I have made a "room", by hollowing out a cube prim, so when I stand inside it, I have 4 walls, a ceiling and floor. What I want to do is texture the inside walls separately from the floor and ceiling - i.e. have glass walls, carpet floor, and wood ceiling. Remember this is only using a 1 prim cube.
When I try and change the texture of one face, the whole of the inside of the cube changes to the selected texture and I'm unable to select just one face to change. I am able to do 2 different textures for the inside of the prim and the outside, but this is not what I'm trying to do.
Does anyone know if this is possible, or am trying to do the impossible?
I know I could use separate prims for walls, ceiling and floor and texture them individually, but I want to keep the prims to an absolute minimum.
Your expert knowledge would be appreciated.

Sue, I think what you are trying is not possible. I believe that the inside of a hollowed prim is counted as one surface or face, so you won't be able to put different textures on the inner walls of your room/prim.

I use a texture which has unique markings over it so I can recognize where in the texture the boundaries of floors and walls are. I have just passed you that texture called ALPHANUMS inworld.
I use it as a temp layer in gimp to guide me and then delete that layer.

Thank you Diag. I think you've confirmed what I was starting to believe.
And thank you ed44 for the texture. Just hope it's still there waiting for me to pick up when I get inworld after SL's upgrade today.

The inside of a hollowed prim is always a single surface.
You can fake being able to place different textures on different interior surfaces of a hollowed cube by 'stitching together' 4 textures horizontally. For example, you could make a texture for a blue wall with a door in it, then a texture for a red wall with a window, then a texture for a green wall that has no window, and then a texture for a blue wall with a pair of windows in it. Place these in a single strip on Photoshop, and save it as a 1024 wide by 256 high texture, then import that to SL. Applying that to the inside of a hollowed cube will be the same effect as being able to apply four 256 x 256 textures to the individual faces. (To apply the same 'four' textures to the outside of that cube, use a 0.25 horizontal repeat and play with the horizontal offset values.)
By the way, a single hollowed prim won't have a 'ceiling' or a 'floor. Hollowing a cube always goes the full Z-height distance, unlike a sphere or some of the other prims.

Sorry, LL won't let me tell you where I sell my textures and where I offer my services as a sim builder. Ask me in-world.

Well spotted Ceera I meant to say I have 2 walls, a ceiling and floor, having rotated the prim. Sorry. And thanks for your helpful suggestion. That will give me something to play around with while SL is down for the upgrade.

I recently used a hollowed out cube to make a roof for a small shack. It's textured with several different textures, so it is possible. To do it, you need to select the item for editing, and then from the texture tab, click on "select texture". Then, you need to click on the individual portion of the prim that you want to texture (in this case, a wall, floor, or ceiling). Then repeat for each other section that you want to texture. It's a bit tricky at first, but definitely possible. Might be easiest to practice on a cube and texture the outside panels first. Brewer

The "inner wall" of a hollowed prim counts as one surface. ...using "select texture" will select the =entire= "hole/inner wall" of the hollowed out prim.
So it is true that you can put several different textures on the "outside" of the hollowed prim, you cannot put several different textures on the "inside/inner wall/hole" of the hollowed out prim.
As for the OP, Ceera Murakami's suggest was stellar!
