Sorry, I am newbie on this game.
Can I ever get out of the orientation island and go somewhere else, and how?
I meet, second life is the hot game now, it got to have more than this island.
I am a free user by the way.

Try clicking on your "Search" button and go to the "Places" tab, then type something like "beach" and click teleport on one of the resulting items. Lately, search/map/teleport have been kind of screwy... so you might just happen to have gone into the game at a bad time an those items weren't even working. Try again.
PS - an yes, SL is a !!!HUGE!!! place

go through the tutorial. there is a HUD in you inventory. you need to "Wear" it and follow the instructions on the screen.

if the tutorial is broken, look around the central platform area for a billboard that says "Neeed Help? visit help island" i think its to the left of the purple station.
click that billboard and it will give you a landmark
teleport
then you will be free to go anywhere in the world.

Hmm, there's nothing really helpful there, but thanks for pasting.

MM yes but if he hasn't completed the tutorialhis map will only show the one orientation island he's on. that wil lbe the only region in the world, to him.

hmmm.... seems the process has become more complicated than it was when i joined. great way to confuse the newbies even more.

Yeah the worst part is, you know how sometimes textures take a long time to load... you know how they are blurry for a while? Well the HUD is textured.. the instructions are just a blur for a good while when you first enter the world, with no indication that they are about to get any clearer. looks like $*(@#, basically. first impressions.
Anyway.. the help island billboard is a neat trick to get out of the complicated process -- i hope many newbies figure it out. if they can, that means they've "passed the tutorial" in by book, for sure.

I completed, know how to fly and ride cars (still can't fly the bi plane yet)
thanks for the advice.
I also got some free houses and villa, but I need my own land to build on it, right?

The map may look that way, but you can still use the search technique to tp out...at least as of mid-June when I started a new alt. I never took one step in any direction on OI before teleporting out. Probably not advisable for an actual new player, though...

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

You can rez them in a sandbox if you want to see what they look like. But, yeah, if you want to live in them you gotta own (or at least rent) land.

My brother skiped out of orientation island. Now I regret having told him how, and he regrets having left before he knew how the game operates; I get calls from him almost daily on how to do this that and the other thing. All stuff that is covered on orientation island.

I didn't get a "HUD" thingie when I arrived, and I just left without doing anything there. Left Orientation Island and went to the Help Island (oops, when I say Help Island, I mean "The Pond", when I started there was something about joining a community and going through the community start system, but for some reason it wouldn't let me choose "The Pond", so I immediately TP'd there when I arrived in SL). OI just seemed to be a place where men were walking around hitting on the women and asking RL questions, so I left hurriedly.

sorry, you're right. they could also just be looking for lost inventory items. :)
