Is my video card out of date?

I have not too long ago purchased a new Gateway laptop that came with windows Vista, and although Vista users are experiencing problems I am curious if my ATI Radeon X1150 causes my crashes by perhaps falling below the minimum specs for SL. As I start SL the welcome page does not even load, it is simply a black window that stays for a few seconds before closing and being replaced by a crash report.

First Make sure you have the most current drivers from ATI.

Did it ever run correctly on your laptop?

If it did, it should still work.

If you didn't buy your video card tomorrow, it is out of date.

But that doesn't necessarily address your problem.

I have logged on to Second Life using a fairly new ATI and a fairly old nVidea. The nVidea is slow but stable. The ATI is fast but only lasts about a half hour before it starts bugging out, and is a frequent crasher. For some reason, ATI cards and Second Life don't play together well.

From what I have been able to determine, Second Life has bugs related to the texture cache that cause bad memory leaks. The problem isn't all with Second Life, though, I get crashes faster if I have been doing something that uses the graphics card before I log in to Second Life. I have to clear the Second Life cache AND reboot the computer to get reasonable performance for any period of time. I think both Second Life and the ATI drivers handle memory poorly, and when the two come together, they both cease functioning together all the faster. And I do religiously check the ATI site for new drivers.
