Singing in Second Life Question

I’ve been thinking about singing in Second Life for a while now and been talking about it with a few live performers that I interact with each day. I’m thinking about per recording all the songs I would like to sing because at the times I could sing on Second Life, my boyfriend and son are watching television and I really don’t feel like having a volume war with my boyfriend. Any advice on any programs I can use or type of mic I should use. I have a few tracks downloaded without vocals and of course the songs with vocals so I can practice. I just have a regular head phone/mic set. I think it’s a Logitech. Any suggestions or advice would be nice. I’m also using winamp and also have a program called b.u.t.t (yep seriously the name, lol).

I wish someone would tell that to the Lindens.

I would advise against prerecording your singing... unless you are planning on telling people up front that is what you do. There have been some artists that have done that in the past... and when the truth comes out (and it will eventually) fans don't take it too well.

Standard industry singing mics are the Shure 58 and Shure 58A, and cost $99 & $169 dollars respectively. I own both. With the proper connector/adapters you can plug directly into your computer using software like Cakewalk Music Creator or Adobe Auditions to sing and mix tracks with. My guitarist uses Cakewalk and when i am at his place we plug directly into the computer.

I would not perform for a live audience using a logitec head mic as you #1 have poor vocal tone pickup and you have no mic volume control since you cannot raise and lower the mic from your mouth as you need to with the song.

For an idea of sound quality, you can see and hear me sing here on my youtube channel: (http://www.youtube.com/user/brianadawsonsl#p/u) and what i am singing into is basically a digital camera microphone on most of the vids.

I only have a few songs that we did with me singing into the computer but the are just repeats of whats already up there so i never put them up.

oh ack! the best shows are those where the performer interacts live with the audience. also, i don't think anyone will believe YOU are the singer if you prerecord. it's not really "live" if it's not really live, cuz then you're just a DJ. you know?

Yeah that's what I kind of figured, thanks. I was planning on being up front about it. I just know some venues don't really like per-recorded tracks.

Yeah I realized that today when I was messing around on myspace karaoke. It made my voice sound over powering over the music and distorted. Thanks for the advice.

Yeah, I completely understand that. I'll just have to find times that I am able too.

Thanks for the tips and advice everyone, really appreciated.

I know a very successful SL singer that has her tunes pre-recorded and plays them the way a DJ would as part of her show, talking between them and admitting they are recorded, but if the audience is getting interactive she switches to singing live. You can tell the difference and her most successful shows are when she is live.
There is something about the sound of a singer responding to the crowd that is lost in the pre-recording process, and the audience can feel it even if they can't say what it is.

Brianna, you're head is cut off a bit in the video. Just in case you weren't aware of that. :p

It sounded like good singing to me.

All the posts I've read of yours and I didn't know you sing.

Thanks Suezanne! I started back in 08 and have kept it fairly private except for a few close friends in SL who bugged me to make it more public, so i did. :)

There is another video of me in my living room and that one does not have my head cut off....Though i do prefer the ones where i am not seen. Heck i don't even go there so i dont have to look at myself. haha.
