Try Control+0, (ZERO), that lets you zoom in very close. Just learned that the other day. Torley has a bunch of very helpful tutorial videos on youtube.

Thank you. Control+0 worked. How do you undo that though? I also rezzed a small cube and zoomed in on that to get close the face.

Actually isn't CTRL-9 back to default camera? CTRL-8 zooms out while CTRL-0 zooms in

However since the camera doesn't move, the LOD doesn't change. So be sure you are close enough because otherwise your attachments might not be rezzed properly! ;)

Ctrl/Alt lets you lock you view onto a person or objrct, including yourself. Then you can zoom in close using your mouse.

I use alt-click, then zoom with the mouse wheel. Works nicely. :)

Yeah, in technical terms, regular zooming changes the distance between the camera and the object, while ctrl+8/9/0 changes the Field of View (FOV). The sniper scopes in the various iterations of Unreal Tournament are examples of the camera not moving, only the FOV changing. The maximum FOV you can get in SL is 180, which looks really weird, since you're seeing everything forward from directly to the left of you to directly to the right of you. An extremely low FOV doesn't look so distorted if you're going for extreme close up on a person or object, but if you catch any background objects in the frame, they'll appear to be a lot closer to the foreground object than they actually are.

I think it's a lot like in RL filmmaking, when you use different sized camera lenses for different depth-of-field effects. I'm not a filmmaker, though, so I might be entirely wrong about that.
