I see people mentioning Jira in other threads. Can someone tell me what a Jira is and where they are found?

My stupid question of the day, sorry

It's the public defect-tracking tool. See http://jira.secondlife.com/.

Since the SL Client is open source, it has an open system for issue tracking - this is the JIRA. I'm not quite sure if the initials are a mnemonic though.

The public is defective? o.O

I am bumping you to an 8.5 on the Official Trout Measuring Instrument of Sluttiness. You are an enigma - on the one hand a sweet, gentle, intelligent woman who we would like to wrap up in our arms and protect, and on the other, a temptress to whom we would like to do all sorts of unmentionable things.

Congratulations and shame on you! You are a bit of a slut.

Just out of interest, why is it called Jira?

I've been trying to think of what it could be an abbreviation/acronym for and haven't come up with anything.

:D And I forgot to mention that you can also use the jira to suggest new features. The public could benefit from some of those, too, I think.

JIRA is issue tracking and project management software produced by Atlassian. A product page with a ton of info on it can be found here: http://www.atlassian.com/software/jira/

The Second Life JIRA is located at http://jira.secondlife.com. It's currently the fourth hit when searching for "jira" on Google. There's also a search option right here on the SL Forums.

...

Thanks for asking about this, actually. I always assumed JIRA was an acronym of some sort, but the real answer is both sillier and more inspiring. From the FAQ:

"Like all good names in the software industry, it started as an in-house code name.

Our experience with Bugzilla was less than pleasant, and the developers in the office started calling it by the Japanese name for Godzilla, Gojira (the original black-and-white Japanese Godzilla films are also office favourites). As we developed our own bug tracker, and then it became an issue tracker, the name stuck, but the Go got dropped - hence JIRA!

Further investigation into the name has revealed that Gorira is Japanese for "gorilla", whilst Kujira is Japanese for "whale". So Gojira is roughly translated to mean "gorilla the size of a whale"!

For those who care - it sounds best if you yell it loudly, as though charging into battle. C'mon - try it!"

Thanks for that, so you can go in and vote on a jira someone has created? Does it really help to get things done? Honestly?

Your normal questions must concern the finer points of optimizations with parallel algorithems because this is not a stupid question at all.

Thanks for the explanation of the name, which as soon as I read it I realised I'd read before and forgotten.

Now, what's the issue number for the defective memory once you hit 40 bug....?

If you are managing open source software you need to have some system for determining what bugs get fixed and which enhancements are incorporated and also some way of prioritising such changes. It is common to have some sort of voting system to determine this - otherwise the user group member who shouts the loudest wins.

Yes, you can vote on existing issues, or propose updates such as combining them or linking them to other issues.

Yes, it does help get things done. Although sometimes it's hard to see the link between the JIRA and the action...some issues with few votes get acted on right away, others with many supporters seem to linger on and on.

The bloody thing is difficult (for me, anyway) to search, so if you create an issue and want to drum up support for it, post its URL here in the forums to help other people find it.

My normal questions usually concern the detrimental effects of ad farm over population on the geopolitical balance of SL.

Ouch, my head hurts now

Geopolitical? Careful now! I know it's Friday - but this could end up merged with the racism thread.

JIRA is used to track any bug or enhancement request for SL, not just the ones relating to the client.

JIRA's UI was designed for engineers, so it can be tough to figure out. Simple instructions on how to "vote" for an issue that you'd like to be fixed:

If you want a lot of info about SL's use of JIRA, including how to start a new issue, it's on the wiki:
