How do I use the Texture Console?

Hi,

I'd like to understand the Texture Console (Debug menu, ctrl-shift-3) a bit better. Specifically, is there a possibility to highlight a specific object's textures on that readout? I haven't found any info in the knowledgebase. Thanks :)

As far as I've been able to tell, it shows you info for all textures in view. To highlight a specific one, select that texture on a surface inworld.

Hi Jackal

If you start the editor and click on the "edit texture" check box, you can then select a texture. You then click on the "texture" tab of the bottom part of the edit dialog box.

You should see two squares next to each other, one for the texture, one for the colour. If you clock on the texture box it should bring up an additional window showing some properties of the selected texture and also where it is in your inventory.

Not sure if you need full perms to the texture for this to work.

I am writing this from memory (wet ram, very volatile), so someone with inworld access might care to correct me.

Carol, the Object Editor isn`t the texture console that Jackal Ennui is asking about. The question revolves about the debugging information available from the Client Menu, formerly the Debug Menu.

Jackal, I`m sorry, but while I know what you are talking about, I have no clue how to use it.

Chosen, how do I do that?

Sorry if I was unclear. What I meant my "select that texture on a surface inworld" was to use the Select Texture option on the editor, and click on a surface of a prim. You'll highlight just the one clicked-upon surface in the 3D world, and if you look at the texture console at that point, the selected texture should be highlighted in yellow.

I should qualify that by saying it's been a while since I've used it (certainly not in this update, or even I think in the last one), and I'm not inworld right now to test it out. Given LL's penchant for changing things without notice, I could be wrong about the console's current behavior.

Now, is this information useful for anything?:D

Aha! Thanks. I'll try that.

Pity one cannot highlight all an object's textures at the same time, it would be a great way to check for forgotten 512x512 textures on hidden faces.

Unless I'm mistaken, you can. Just select the whole object, and all its textures should highlight on the console.

I still haven't gotten inworld to test this, by the way, so if I'm wrong, I apologize. My computer's been acting up, so I'm in the process of backing up all my data so I can reformat my hard drives and start fresh. The external hard drive I borrowed from someone for the backup is incredibly slow (took like 6 hours to back up the first 70GB), and I don't want to chance any screw-ups by running anything processor-intensive like SL until it's done.

I went in-world a few minutes ago and tested the whole thing out. This is what I observed:

- Open texture console, nothing highlighted yellow.
- Make cube, texture, keep in edit selection: one entry highlighted yellow
- Texture one side separately, keep in edit selection: two entries highlighted yellow

So far, it looked good, and I also selected one side separately and observed that again, only one entry was highlighted.

Then I made another cube, textured with yet another texture (this time 512x512 instead of 256x256), and the texture console didn't reflect my selection. It still showed the two 256x256 textures from earlier as highlighted yellow. I waited a small amount of time for it to update, but it just didn't.

Sooo ... is this thing bugged, or am I just not making it work correctly?

The other simpler way is to select the prim and hit ctrl-alt-shift-T.
It shows how many different textures and what dimensions they are on the prim.

You can select multiple prims and do this, but I guess it churns out too much info.

Thank you, this is very helpful and exactly what I was wanting to do.
