Sorry if this is a total newb question but...

I'd like to build/create/buy a house with 2500-3000 square feet, I'd like the house to be permanent.

Do I need to purchase land? How much land would I need to purchase? Is there any tutorials or information on the site I missed regarding this?

Can I have add another person to be the "owner" of the house or at least have full control over it?

Again, sorry for the newb questions and I appreciate any help anyone can provide.

If you want to leave something in the world full time, like a house, you definitely need to either buy or rent land.

The relationship isn't so much the size of the house, as how many prims it uses. Prims are the basic building blocks. And there is a limit to how many you can put on a parcel of land.

I dont have the numbers off the top of my head.

There are a number of reputable landlords who rent parcels of land, for a fixed amount of linden each week, you use the land and up to a specified number of prims.

I highly suggest you rent before buying. There are several advantages. It's easy to walk away, most of the time. You save your "First Land" benefit until you understand better how to make the most of it. And you aren't out up-front costs, at least most of the time.

The subject of land is complicated and there are a wide variety of circumstances to explore.

Hope that answers some of your questions. I'd check with the inWorld resources for new players like the Shelter and New Citizens Inc (NCI) who I believe have detailed notecards about land.

Hi, you will need to either purchase land or rent land. You can purchase from another resident or from Linden Lab. You can rent land owned by another resident. Details vary so look under search in the game and look for rental/purchase. You can also use the classifieds in game and on the website here.

You can grant anyone that you've exchanged "friendship" cards with the rights to modify your property. You'll find that on the friendship tab.

I'll post a few links here but look around the website, there's a lot of information here to help.

Yes, you will need to either purchase, or rent land.

You will need to have sufficient space for your house. In addition, if you want your house to be a complicated or "busy" structure you will need to ensure that you have adequate prims available. Prims are the building blocks of Second Life - they're the basic objects that you create with the build tool. Each area of land has a limited number of prims that it can support - the bigger the space, the more prims. 2500sqm of land would entitle you to around 571 prims, which is probably enough for a moderately complicated house.

You would need to buy 2500-3000 sqm of land. If you decide to rent the land from another resident, you can rent this amount directly - you will need to pay each month, usually in L$. If you purchase the land outright, you will need to buy the land initially and then pay a "tier fee" (the equivalent of rent) to Linden Labs in real money each month. However, tier fees go up in tiers (thus the name) and unfortunately, 3000 sqm of land is "just at the low end" of one of these tiers, meaning that if you made a house of that size you might as well buy extra land because you will be charged the same tier either way.

No worries, this new forum seems to be THE place to ask total newbish questions!

1) You don't really need to purchase land --- you can also rent. But yes, basically you need to pay for the land for things like houses you want to keep rezzed in-world.

2) In SL everything is measured in metric system, so you need to do a little math to decide how much land you need. You also need to think about how many prims you are going to need. If you want a detailed house full of furniture and a yard full of vegetation, you need to purchase much much larger land than the house.

3) If you are on Premium account and you haven't already, don't pass up your chance to claim First Land. I would recommend spending some time on your First Land to get used to the basic mechanics of land/prims before buying larger parcels.

4) You can find some useful tutorials at the knowledge Base such as this;
http://secondlife.com/knowledgebase/article.php?id=090

5) If you want another person to have control over your house/property, you need to create a land-holding group and "deed" the land to the group via General tab of About Land window. Then you need to add the person to the group and grant necessary rights via Members & Roles tab of group info window. You also may need to share the house/furniture etc with group via General tab of Edit tools window. *phew*
Or if it's just about the house/furniture and not land control, you can simply add him/her in your friends list and grant modify rights. Please be aware that granting mod rights means that the person can do whatever s/he wants with your objects.

I forgot to mention about the house ... there are some very fine prefab houses available, in various price ranges and various levels of detail (meaning more or fewer prims).

There are also a number of freebie houses ... several built back in the day by Lindens .. and others offered by residents.

Those are good for taking apart and looking at how things work, how to build a house, etc.

Also, many people who are renting rent a house, so you dont have to make that decision immediately.

Awesome...thanks to everyone for the detailed answers I really appreciate it. I'm going to do some reading on this a bit before I jump into buying land.

Cheers!

Also just as a thought, remember you need to furnish it as well and maybe have some exterior features - deck, pool, whatever.

Keep this in mind when working out your prim requirements - no sense having a nice pretty house if all you can put in it is a wooden chair :D

Hehe, I've been playing the same game. I just tried resurrecting this one ...

It's frustrating because they don't look locked until you try to reply.

I almost didn't notice this was a necro and was going to point out that "first land" doesn't exist any more. I'm not quite awake yet, obviously :o
