Anybody knows if the Linden Labs has plans to use any immersive hardware interface, like HMD's, gloves...?

Thanks.

They'll have to do such eventually or they'll certainly fall behind competitors. I'd imagine it won't be happening until after Mono is out however and all the current issues plaguing the system are resolved. I haven't come across any articles to suggest a "real VR" experience is anywhere near completion or even in development at the moment.

"Real VR" I thought those aspiraions died in like 1989 along with the rubik's cube lol.
But seriously, VR needs alot of development to be a viable "real" experience instead of something gimmicky as it has previously been.

If they did, I bet the experience would be somewhat like this.

(warning: if you're at work, or somewhere where the odd bit of bad language would not be appropriate, best not click.)

Exactly. And I'm certain the computer power to handle tens of thousands of concurrent users all using such equipment will require radically different technology than today. That's not to say it's far away -- germanium infused chips offer the potential for hundred fold clock speed increases. With the way flash memory is getting exceedingly larger, quicker, and allowing more rewrites, we may soon have flash virtual memories (Virtual RAM, not some aspect of Second Life) capable of delivering RAM-like performance from a SSD flash memory card. A quick look over at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_ATI_Graphics_Processing_Units suggests graphic cards are going to be getting much more powerful soon. We'll soon have a whole range of quad core cpu's from Intel... These are the kind of innovations that will need to be undertaken before VR can even have a chance.

I'm waiting until I can go holographic, then I can really surprise my RL-er!

Yep. We need atleast a 1024x768 pixel display. So far, the best affordable headsets have a max resolution of 800x600. Then it's questionable as to whether it's possible to avoid the side effects of using a headset, regardless of resolution. They're notorious for causing nausea, dizziness and headaches.

I once tried a headset myself and didn't feel too great after. Although I do think that it may be possible to adjust to it with a little perseverance. It's even possible to feel a little weird after using a large monitor if you're not used to it.

if you google diligently, youcan find the plans for a home-brew hardware device that interprets chat and converts it into signals suitable for controlling a --- ahem --- well, a remote hardware device.

My Rubik's cube is still alive, I even have the Irish green on 6 sides version too.

One development in the pipeline that was mentioned in an article in PC Advisor by one of the creators was the ability to "Talk" in world instead of typing. Now that would edfinitly remove some of the mystery of SL.
