Where's the other thread about this? I *know* I posted in it but it's not showing in my profile lists of 'posts by me'. This is the second time - am I magically vanishing threads with the awesome power of my post?

*resolves to take a screenshot of this reply as proof incase this thread vanishes too*

(In answer, I think a load of folk were having the same issue. Haven't tried again tonight yet though so I don't know if I'm still getting the same)

I've had similar issues and thought it may have been caused by closing of ports but when I got these messages, I was able to connect via the forum for some strange reason..........

The phrase could not resolve domain name means that something in the process that translates secondlife.com into a numeric network address is broken. The question is where. It can be anywhere from the network stack on your computer to the computers at the other end that resolve Linden's addresses.

When this sort of thing happens to me, I suspect one of the following:
  1. The network code on my machine is hosed. Try rebooting.
  2. There's something going on with the firewall. This is unlikely, for this particular message, because the ports used for name resolution should always be open. (It's a bit more likely if you're at work or school, since they're more likely to put controls onto the firewall.)
  3. There's something broken with a domain name server in the path between you and SL. Usually this sort of thing affects a lot of people, and hits the news. There was an attack on some of these machines a few days ago, but I don't think that's your problem.
  4. There's something broken at the far end. If everything else seems to work, then contact Linden Labs technical support.

The most likely items are the first and last ones, so start by rebooting. If other people have no problem connecting, it's probably this, but it's certainly possible for the problem to be at Linden's end and yet only some people will see it.

The third item is a bit tricky to analyze because of caching. If your browser seems to work fine, trying going to a less popular site that you haven't visited today. It needs to be unpopular so that the address isn't likely to be cached by your ISP. I usually use links on blogs or in these forums for that purpose. I've only seen one case of partial outage like this, so don't put a lot of effort into it if you're unsure.

In addition to rebooting you might try turning your modem off for a while and then turning it back on.
