It seems to be an awful waste of resources (generating lag etc) for so many people to on-line in sl just editing their appearance, trying on clothes, doing inventory maintenance etc, when all this could be done off-line.
Does anyone know if an off-line version exists?

It would be much too hard to integrate anything you did offline with any changes that might be occurring on the server at the same time. So, no.

It's a very interesting question though. It raises another one: Just what 'inventory' is there on my computer when off-line? When I login I get a second pass of the bargraph downloading clothes. Is everything just on the servers or is there something local? Regards,

To answer the original poster's question, no, there is no off-line way to edit appearance or do most SL functions.
It is marginally possible to do some building off-line, in the 3D app "Maya", and import raw prim data to Sl, but I beleve all the texturing has to be done avter you get it into SL, and the range of prim types you can import is incomplete. Also, Maya is NOT cheap!
