Hi BB, plenty of threads about them .. if you're that much of a masochist LOL
Basically, they are scripted avatars (I think) that automatically scan the 'land for sale' lists and buy that which falls below a certain price/sm and transfer it to the owners posession for subsequent pricing up and reselling. |

Bots don't even come remotely close to Asimov's Robots and seem to be lacking the '3 laws'. You'd get a decent conversation out of one of Asimov's robots. Don't expect anything even as sophisticated as a grunt out of a bot.

Bots are not simple 'scripted' Avatars.
The Second Life Scripting Language (LSL) can't control an Avatar like a Robot. At the Moment, libsecondlife is the Way to go. With libsecondlife, a Programmer can write Programs, in C# Language, to act like a SL client / viewer. Another possible Way would be to modify the Open source second Life Client (openSL) - but thats a huge Pile of C++ Code and there is no built-in scripting, so it would be a lot of hard work to do. |

No, but if I recall right in the book the 3 laws were removed from them so they go be used for not so nice tasks? Or am I getting stories mixed up? (It is at least more then 15 years ago I did read the books from Asimov).

Thankyou for correcting me Cindy. Not having 'met' a landbot I guess I was getting confused with the equally notorious copybot inasmuch as they I gather actually looked like avatars. |

CopyBot was also a product of libsecondlife.
Theoretically though, with the protocol open for inspection you are not limited to c#, but could write a bot in any language you fancy. |

One can actually look Copybot up in wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Copybot Landbot doesn't have a page yet. Landbot must need a new publicistbot.

I wrote one, but the powers that be at wikipedia told me such language was inappropriate for their general readership. ![]() _____________________
