Yesterday I bought a rather expensive item in an SL shop. While I was standing there trying to figure out how to use it, I was approached by an avatar who proceeded to try to con me out of it. It was a very good con (and I've been conned by the best of them) but when it became obvious I wasn't going for it, he(?) pulled out a gun, told me he was going to shoot me, and did! The next thing I knew I was sailing through space totally out of control. "Stop all animations" did nothing. I had to log out and log in again.

I assume that cons are part of the game, and was actually enjoying the give and take, but I didn't appreciated being literally blown away. I can't believe that the Lindens would approve of this kind of behavior, as it puts a definite damper on commerce. Assuming I got the avatar's name, do I have any recourse, like being able to report the assault?

That's just horrific! Your story brought tears to my eyes. Report him to Philip Linden. He's the Superman of Second Life. He will return justice to our streets.

LL doesn't approve of this behaviour. You were orbited. Without your consent, that's against the TOS. Click Help > Report Abuse, if this happens to you again. If you can't remember the offender's name while coasting through space, click Help > Bumps, Pushes and Hits...and chances are...they will be listed as somebody who pushed you.

You dont have to log out, just teleport. I was orbited my first week in SL and it is very confusing experience. They count on your disorientation to be able to get away with it.

Cons are not supposed to be part of the game. What happened to you was called "orbiting" - the gun doesn't actually do you any harm, it just pushes you upwards really really hard, so that you're so far above the landscape it'd take hours for you to fall back down. As has been mentioned, you can get out of this by teleporting.

If it does happen, choose "Help -> Bumps, Pushes & Hits" and you should be able to see the list of all people who've pushed you recently - the last one is probably the orbit. If there's nothing there, go into the Build menu, select Edit and drag a selection area around yourself - it's possible the orbiter is working by putting you in an invisible box, and you can see the "owner" of the box as the name of the person responsible. Once you have the name, Help -> Report Abuse and enter the name.

You should also let the shop owner know that people are trying to con his/her customers and attacking people in their shop. Most likely they will turn on the "no push" protection on the shop land, which will make it impossible for many weapons of that type to work.

Sadly, no, he's not the police.

The best you can do is report the jerk who did it, if you can remember his name.

He enjoyed the 'con' banter because he assumed it to be RP. He didn't enjoy the being orbited bit. ;)

Thanks for the information and tips, all. It is somehow comforting to know that what happened to me has a name, and I'm glad that it isn't "murder!"
