I have an odd question, spawned from curiosity more than anything, and perhaps a certain naivete and social dysfunction on my own part.
SL can be a very social place, and I've discovered social interactions can happen just about anywhere. But I don't quite understand the strong sense of "clubbing" that seems to pervade SL. I constantly see "ads" for clubs, managers looking for DJs, etc. And yet, when I happen upon a club, and the one time I was seeking one out, they were all empty.
Can some club enthusiasts enlighten me as to the appeal of clubs (I suspect it's just a common ground for socializing, but I'm wondering if there's a further appeal I'm missing)? And if the existing ones are often empty, why are more always on the horizon.
I do not want to spawn a thread of negativity here, just understanding.
Thank you.

You aren't really missing anything. See, there are lots and lots and lots of clubs. Most clubs close after being open only a month or so. New ones are popping up all the time.
Myself, I have found a couple clubs that are normally busy, but not so busy that nothing will rez. Look around some more, you'll find busy ones. If the club scene isn't your thing, find something else. =)

Being a head manager at a club myself, I know that lots of clubs seem empty. But that changes the moment US residents are logging in. Mostly the clubs are almost empty at US nighttime. When it's crowded it can be lots of fun and I made some good friends at various clubs.

Thanks. I appreciate the response. While the club scene isn't for me, and I admit that, I'm thoroughly fascinated by human behaviour and trends. The entire SL experience has me captivated and my anthropologically inclined brain is in overdrive -- hence my curiosity. Now a nice coffee shop or tea house, more my thing, I have not yet found. Then again, I haven't looked that hard yet

I wouldn't expect a club in either world to be full all the time. Clubs in RL aren't generally busy (if they're even open) during the day, and given the people who frequent some of the clubs here in Aberdeen, I'm surprised they even open on school nights These RL clubs do have more resources than SL clubs, so can afford to be open even more often (since they can afford more DJs and stuff). Clubbing in SL is undoubtably different to clubbing in RL, though. On the simplest level, however, I like combining my social experiences with listening to someone play music I love. *shrug* I don't like mainstream clubs in either world, but that's just me. I don't like spam-filled clubs in SL, and I suspect that's not just me. But there are some gems.

Clubs are a good way to meet people especially when you are new becuase they want you to be there.
A lot of people I think want the attention that being a club owner provides.
While others dont like the way this club or that club is and think they can do better.
Then theres the belief theres money to be made. Which for most clubs doesnt pan out.

I'm a dancer in a club and you'll frequently find our club empty. When it's busy, it rocks. It's all a matter of when people are logged in which we have pretty much down to a science. Our staff shows up just as we are expecting a rush, and sure enough they come.
I love clubs. I love to dance and chat and listen to good music. It's like chatting elsewhere but with more excitement going on. To me the music really makes the club.

Thank you, that's great insight. It's like an interactive radio station of sorts where you are able to connect with those who enjoy similar music. I never really thought about using SL to listen to music (I just spin my own CDs in RL while in SL and never click the music or video available in SL). Food for thought!
