Would anyone happen to know what the avatar upper limit would be for a sim with zero prims? What could I get away with if I allow/disallow external scripts?

The highest number of avatars ive seen in a sim is about 80 or so. I have no idea how laggy it was, since i didnt enter.

Really, this question cant be answered properly without knowing what you consider to be an acceptable amount of lag.

Depends on what you consider acceptable in terms of frame rate and minimum system specs to 'use' the sim, I suppose.

A private sim owner can set their sim to allow as many as 100 avatars at once in the sim. None do this that I am aware of, as it paralyzes all motion and scripts. With my own system, which is at or near minimum acceprable levels for accessing SL, I can't hope to do anything worthwhile in any sim that has 30 or more avatars anywhere close to where I am. I may as well be looking at a slide show, with 1 FPS or worse frame rates, and chat so scrambled that communication is impossible.

You can fit more people into a denny's resturant then you can into a sim....

(i counted them this weekend!)

seems strangley wrong and wrongly strange that we would pay 195 to 295 a month for 16 acres of land, that can only hold 40 people ;)

A class 4 sim starts to lag noticeably with 20 visitors, if you allow external scripts. A class 5 sim can take more I guess. If you disallow external scripts, you can squeeze 40 people in without too much lag (i.e., things get slow, but not "let's rather call it spf than fps" slow).

I wouldn't disallow external scripts though. Makes a bad impression on me when I enter a shop or club where I'm forced to walk like the former Pope, because my walk replacer goes on strike. Usually I leave a place right away when I feel treated like a potential grid terrorist.

100 people in a class 5 voidsim last month - yes it was laggy but not too bad - time dilation of .97 - .99.

Yeap, you heard me... void sim. Void. Sim. No special precautions taken; nobody told to strip down to a noob avatar. Scripts allowed.

Not kidding, and I have 99 witnesses. :)

I was checking out the Tiki club at Hedonism II one night, I was the 93rd person in the sim. It was not bad at all for me.
