I tried to contact Linden about this a couple of weeks ago but I still haven't had any reply from them so come here for help.
I'm having problems with textures rezzing first time in SL. It seems I have to ALT-CLICK everything for just about any texture to rez properly (which once clicked, rezzes almost instantly). Some people mentioned it could be lag but if that were so, how come the texture rez instantly when clicked on and how come if I don't they *never* rez properly if I simply wait for them to rezz on their own (eg 30 mins). I've got a 2GB ADSL line, Athlon 64 X2 3800 with 3GB RAM and a Radeon 800 XT Platinum.
Does anyone else have the same problem as me and is ther any fix/workaround?
Also, what exactly does the cache actually cache? If I go to another sim with the same textures as my orignial location, it seems the whole business of loading textures starts all over again (meaning I have to spend 10 mins ALT-Clicking everythnig) and then if I go back to my orignal sim, it seems all the textures have been forgotten there too. If I set the cache to 1Gb, what on earth is it storing?
I've recently tried a 4Gb cache with the recent first look browser and the problem still reoccurs.
I've reinstalled from scratch (including wiping caches manually) several time but it doesn't seem to fix the situation.

Are you using the First Look viewer? I would fill out a bug report.

Been using both for a while. (plus the old SL viewer and two previous versions of first look viewer) I was fine with the first viewer I had (default on as of 12 Dec 2006) but after that I have to click on everything.
But maybe you're right. My post might actually get some attention.

Long shot... but try deleting your preference settings (the settings.xml file).
There are two of them, one for your account and one for the computer. In Windows they are usually located at:
C:\Documents and Settings\<your-name>\Application Data\SecondLife\user_settings
C:\Documents and Settings\<your-name>\Application Data\SecondLife\<your-avatar-name>
Shutdown SL. Delete both settings.xml files (leave the settings_default.xml file alone.) Then restart SL.
As for the cache, I believe they only cache items within the current sim/region you are in. I'm not sure what the technical reason behind that is.

Nope.
In fact I did better than that. Recently bought some new hard disks so installed literally everything from scratch.
Problem still occurs.

My trusty old Radeo X800XT PE was begining to make some fan noise so decided that perhaps it might be on it's last legs and bought a shiny new Radeon x1950 xtx. This card pummels all my other games into submission. However whilst Everything else in SL looks better it still has exactly the same rezzing problem. And SL support *still* hasn't got back to me

Caching has been an ongoing problem, often bug reported and never yet fixed, for quite some time now. The First Look viewer, for all its other faults, does seem to be getting a handle on this issue at last. If they can solve the other problems with First Look, like the constant crashing if you maneuver the camera at all, the rendering improvements in First Look may resolve most of this. Certainly the textures appear much faster, and without doing a mouseover or clicking on things, when I've tested First Look. And I have a terribly poor video card - the build-in card on a Mac Mini, with a mere 32 MB VRAM!
I have the same problem that you do. I have to mouseover or click on textures to get them to appear in any reasonable length of time. It doesn't affect all operating system and video cards in this same way, but you're not, by any means, alone in this bug. It's been plaguing us for 6 months or longer.

For me, the First Look viewer makes the texture-rezzing problem far worse. It's always been at least a minor issue with my setup (ATI X1900XTX 512, Athlon 4800+, 4G RAM, AVG anti-virus). In First Look, the problem is magnified a hundredfold. I never rez any clothing or skin textures -- ever.

I think we have a solution.... Read /111/db/146089/1.html#post1431029Thomas Hausdorff suggested it could be something to do with machines with more than 2GB RAM. I had 3GB and reduced it to 2GB and everything started to work as it should. My machine if you're interested Athlon 64 x2 3800+ (Win XP 64) 3GB RAM Radeon x1950xtx (Cat 7.2) Soundblaster XFi Fatal1ty 2MB/280kB ADSL Also had the same problem with a Radeon x800 so also tried that with 2GB - worked great!! There's definitely something up with SL on machines with more than 2GB RAM installed.
