Cross posting this from "Linden Answers" since there have not BEEN any Linden answers at all today!
I keep getting this message when trying to log in. I am told to check my internet access (which is obviously ok since here I am writing). I did a fresh install of SL just in case that might help , but no go. Any ideas?

Didn't I see something about this same problem elsewhere in the forums?
After downloading the new version, one of the NORTON products needed to be updated. Otherwise, it wouldn't let the new SL viewer connect.
Sorry. I don't use Norton or I'd be a little more specific.

Whats your internet provider?

If you have Road Runner, which gives out a firewall/virus program called: Easy Armor

that could be your problem, i had that and untill i turned it off completely(shut Program off), i could not connect.

If their issue was Norton Internet Security, things might be improved by removing it, not updating.

In rare cases, an ISP has goofed and blocked out a DNS. My Adelphia did that on my line, somehow for some reason and I spent all day cursing LL....

Sterling mumbles his opinion, "removing Norton from your system IS an update"...

I have some problems with ZoneAlarm, whereby it sometimes starts to block all programs irrespective of settings. Then I will get the error message you mention.
