I have heard several stories of people buying stuff or buying $L and losing the money due to SL computer glitches... I guess. Are there any precautions you can take to ensure that doesnt ever happen when you are dealing in higher amounts?

I haven't heard of this problem but if dealing person to person doing multiple smaller transactions would probably be better than one larger transaction. When dealing with objects the best suggestion is probably don't if you can help it. For larger transactions even if everything is working properly it's safer and in my opinion more personal and better to deal person to person especially in larger amounts.
Addendum: Most merchants will be willing to do a person to person transfer and then they'll deal with their end manually if needed if you request it though sine may not and even if they do it means you still have to trust the merchant.

I never heard of money getting lost in a transaction. What can happen though:
1.) You pay a scripted vendor and don't receive your item. In regions where a lot of llGiveInventory commands are executed during a short time, LL's grey goo fence can prevent a vendor from working correctly. Shop owners are aware of that and usually trade your purchased item to you in such a case (don't worry, these cases are rare).
2.) After paying a scripted vendor you accidently click "decline" instead of "accept" when it tries to trade your purchase to you. In that case you should find your ware in your trash folder. If not, shop owners are aware of this too and usually replace your item.
3.) You receive your purchase, but some days later it's missing from your inventory, or you get an error message when trying to rez it and it's gone forever, or you run into another one of the countless inventory bugs causing item loss. Shop owners are very aware of such problems as well and most times give replacements in such a case too.

1 thing that had me concerned was a thread I went to from the login screen a few weeks ago. A guy was saying he lost $50 when he tryed to purchase lindens from sl. This was during some of the messed up stuff after the updates. The replies to him seem to suggest it happens sometimes when sl is messing up.
I was thinking about trying to get into some business stuff here and that is bothersome. After all 1 $50 loss or even a much smaller loss would eat up rl game profits

I have scripted 'Pay' vendors that share money with a business partner. Since a few weeks it happens on a regular base that when there is alot of people online and lots of transactions going on that people pay, get the message for their purchase, taken their money but the object is not in their inventory. A few relogs helps with this problem. It is very annoying tho. I hand all my money to my boyfriend, always in blocks of 100.000, never had any money going lose ever.

A few days ago I found a piece of my Wonder Woman costume (don't laugh at me!) missing. I decided to IM the costume maker (Dee Trollop) and she sent me a replacement item, for free. Thanks Dee! of course I'm sure other designers would have done the same, but I wanted to witness that nice people do actually exist!
