Well, I signed up to Second Life almost 6 months ago and got a 3-month account started. Logged into Second Life and found that I couldn't run it with either my desktop PC (desktop is 3 years old) or my laptop (laptop is only 2 years old). I experimented a lot in trying to change things (a lot of extra expenses involved) and optimistically signed up for a second 3-month term trying to get on. After a lot of further research and running around, a hard drive crash and replacement , RAM upgrades (1 GB), and more, I STILL can't even log in to the stupid start-up island without it freezing up. I managed to see one last quick shot of my naked avatar before it froze up for the 195th time, and that finished it for me. I have an account that is due to expire on the 10th of August, about $9000 Linden dollars and a patch of unused cyber-land that I couldn't get my naked cyber-butt on to. So I am cashing out folks, but don't know how. I can log onto my account, but cannot go "in-world". So how can I cash out and get some of my wasted money back, and perhaps even sell the land, without going inworld. It would be nice to re-coup SOME of the money that I paid for Second Life memberships, as well as the upgrades that didn't work. If I can't sell the land then I might consider donating it all to an online charity, but wouldn't know how to do that either without access inworld..... Village Writer

click "Search" and then the "People tab" and then type in "Broken Xeno" and then click "Pay" and type in 9000 L and click "Pay" I don't think there is any way to pay someone outside of Second Life. You can sell your lindens though?

From: Village Writer So how can I cash out and get some of my wasted money back, and perhaps even sell the land, without going inworld. Village Writer I thought I heard of a communication type browser that did not involve logging in, but I forget the details. Maybe created by a user in the TEEN grid..? How did you buy the land without logging in? Also, what videocard is on the desktop, there are cards as low as $25-$30 that should work ok. Is it a PC on windows, or a mac/linux? You might also try running a "cleanboot" as per microsoft KB article : http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353 Very often it can be a background program causing conflicts. Do you have a friend/family/relative/neighbor with a computer you could use just to log in, sell the property etc? You might even try a library computer or college computer open to the public. Not one you need to access on a regular basis, simply to log in and convert your assets back to RL$ Your account won't actually "expire" in August (though your land/tier fees may), so leaving land aside for the moment, you would be able to recoup any money in the account even after that. And for just linden $, you should be able to use the website to convert the money back.

Wow.
What kind of Internet connection do you have?
What are the specs on the computers (how old they are is less important than what they have in them.)
How did you buy land and accumulate L$9000 without ever once going in-world?

Just out of curiosity... why didn't you try it before buying into SecondLife?

I can understand getting money into the game, but the land part still confuses me. Are you thinking that a premium account gave you a 512 plot of land?
In an absolute last case scenario, you might be able to donate the account to a group however that is wandering into highly questionable territory, and I absolutely would advise against trying to sell it as that wanders smack dab into both potential scams as well as clearcut violations of the EULA/TOS. Most likely all accounts involved would get banned/disciplined.

From: Village Writer Try it? I didn't know I could...... Um ... yeah. You can create an account free, log in free, you can use SL free for as long as you want to ... ideally you'd either find you love it enough to invest some money into it to go premium, buy $L to buy things in-world, etc. or decide it's not for you and leave. You don't have to pay a penny into it until you want to.

Never heard of this problem before. Even abandon land won't work. I also can't understand how land was bought out of world though.

My mistake. I see that I am only "allowed to purchase" 512 land, or something like that. At any rate, I have Linden dollars. Can I transfer (give) them to a friend in Second Life?

Yes, you have no land, but can cash out your money on the main page of the website, see buy/sell lindens. Your money will still be there any time, it won't vanish in August even if your premium subscription ends.
I believe all that would happen is the premium account defaults to a free basic account -- others can correct me if I am wrong.
ALTHOUGH you might need to watch reports of them deleting old accounts that never logged in. That may not affect you if you logged in and immediately crashed, however. However, if it does affect your account, it MIGHT wipe out your $L9000, so watch reports of that for timing your efforts. I believe it is still in discussion stage and no timetable yet.
Otherwise, your money will still be there next year and the year after even if your premium subscription ends. Or just cash it all out today (you'll take a small loss on exchange rates from buying then selling)
Still, it would be nicest of all to help troubleshoot you and get you into the world at last!
As far as giving it to a friend, if you can buy items on websites such as SLexchange or SLBoutique or whatever it is called, using lindens, maybe your friend could list something for sale at the same amount of cash you have, and you could buy it ..? I am really not very sure how all that works.
If you DO have a friend with an SL account, and it is a TRUSTED friend, they also might be able to log into your account and clear it out. Not adviseable as they might also be able to BUY more lindens using your bank info etc on file, and thus rack up your costs even more. But thats not really adviseable and probably against TOS for giving out account info (even for free to friends).
You are really better off either cashing out thru the main page, or leaving it to get at a later date even if your premium subscription ends in august.

To use SLExchange, he would first have to transfer L$ using a SLX terminal inworld. I'd just sell the money on the LindeX (the Sell L$ link on ) and transfer it to paypal, using the Process Credit link on the same page, which shows up as soon as you have an US$ balance.

Just a thought, but do you have a friend with a computer you could use? Install SL, log in, do what tidying up you need to do, log out & remove sl.
But make sure you remove SL completely so you dont suffer any password related injuries.

before you give up completely lets try a few things first i hate having people give up before trying things
go to the log in screen and do NOT connect to sl
hit the preference button
go thru each tab and make things as LOW as possible draw distance graphics settings check every thing possible and get it low if enable vbo or vgo i always forget what it says is checked uncheck it cuz that always messes me up get rid of ripple water uncheck video and music streaming take disable seeing names do not enable bumpmapping or shiny avatar rendering should be normal terrain detail normal all the object, flexible mesh, tree, avatar, mesh detail take them all down as low as possible fog distance ratio take it as low as possible max particle count take it to 0 outfit composite limit take it to 1 or 2 at the most
what kind of vid card do you have? what kind of internet connection do you have?

How much RAM in Total do you have? What kind of Graphics Card, do you update your Drivers? What kind of OS do you run? And Processer?
We can't help you unless you tell us.
If you're going to give your Lindens away anyways, at least pass some on to me. Yeah, I may seem greedy, but I'm Honest.
First tell us some info about your computer.

Today, yesterday, and probably tomorrow, many problems exist that can cause crash of SL client. When this happens to me, I clean the cache and try to login. Once that step is complete, I just stand there in world and do not do anything - especially look at inventory. I wait for everything to synchronize and it can take a long time! Sometimes over 30 minutes. Just wait, then, log out, and login, and things return to normal. Results may vary, but this works for me when it is SL problems.

I think the premium subscription RE-UPS automatically - so if Village Writer cashes out, he'll need to pull the cash out, too, lest it get re-used for next subscription. Or attempts to get used.

I understood that all of their assets were in "linden dollars" -- I don't think LL will accept that for subscription fees?
The big question I guess is:
If you discontinue a premium account, does it automatically convert to a free basic account, or will they instead get "locked out" and told to update payment information before they can log back in?
edit: oops ok now I think I understand that you can keep $USD in your account, so yes withdraw it before it gets aplied to the next period.

You should post the specs of your computer. (Processor speed, Memory on the graphics card, HD space left, etc...) Maybe someone can spot the weak link in your computer and then you can play SL again (except for the lag, asset server crashes, dropped connections, maintenance days, did I mention lag???) If you decide to leave, make a list of everything you need to take care of in SL and then find a computer that can run SL. Contact friends or relatives that can assist you. If that doesn't work, find a library or college that offers public access to a computer. maybe a tech support shop can help? (If you can pry them from world of borecraft. hehehe) Getting rid of that L$ headache can be very easy and rewarding! Just donate your L$ to a virtual bum like me... (Yes, I'm landless)
