Note "Vista" This may very well be your problem. I have yet to hear anything good about vista. Graphics incompatibility is high on it's list of problems.

If you can limp along till the Wednesday update (and the inevitable post-update trauma), it's just possible that the problems will disappear. This update promises the most extensive list of internal bugfixes in SL history (perhaps not surprising, considering the number of bugs... no, I won't go there). If it doesn't help, or if the situation is too urgent to wait, there's a helpful Technical Issues forum ( /111/1.html) that might address your specific problems, if you can't find them in the jira ( https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR). I read good things about the latest nVidia Linux drivers, but don't follow Vista... though updated drivers tend to be worth a shot--I should think especially with a new operating system.

Hi, I have a Vista system (laptop) with an ATI graphics card (v5200) which does exactly this. (I'm using the catalyst 7.6 drivers)
Start SL, within 10-20 minutes the game will freeze, and in fact the computer is frozen completely. No blue screen or reboot. Power button has to be held down to restart.
Another system with Vista x64 and an Nvidia 6600GT graphics card does NOT suffer this problem, although occasionally (once every ~2 hours of SL) the graphics driver will crash, taking SL with it, but the driver will automatically restart leaving other apps up and running just fine (no reboot needed).
I'm convinced the ATI+SL combination is not good. In fact I had an ATI-based home PC before switching to nvidia and had problems with drivers then.

i have Vista, and XP. not one problem from either, none different than everyone elses - noting that each upgrade uses more memory.

From: Yron Dryke ok thanks to everyone will read this here.

I have a Geforce Go 6600 (which came with my laptop and which I am extremely unhappy to say stopped being supported EVEN before I bought it. (( ) The last driver update they did for the graphics card was in 2005, a few months before I bought it. I think the problem, if it is not Vista (and since I'm having the exact same problem with XP) is actually with Geforce. This is what I am guessing. Although, I am interested to see that someone above had the problem with ATI also. Maybe the issue is with SL? This does not happen with ANY other application. Nomatter how graphically intensive. /me is beginning to despise NVIDIA for failing to support products and offering no solutions other than "buy a new computer." My Toshiba Qosmio was top o the line 2 years ago. I guess to be in SL one needs to buy a laptop every 6 months?!? This used to happen to me about every half hour or so. After today's update it happens (I kid you not) every 5 minutes. It's very very frustrating. Anyone know a workaround for updating the Geforce graphics cards since NVIDIA no longer supports them? I may actually break down tomorrow and call them (charge of $35 USD) to get some "official answers." If so, I'll report back. If anyone can save me the $35 that'd be awesome.

I believe that a LOT of laptop users with NVidia cards, use these drivers are they are updated for notebooks far more regularly than official laptop drivers: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/See also their page here: http://www.laptopvideo2go.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=9243

Brash, thank you so much!! Now I know it isn't SL and it isn't NVIDIA it's the OEM (Toshiba in this case) behind the lack of support for the Geforce Go cards. My modified driver seems to be working just fine. I haven't frozen up since the installation.
Thank you very very much for pointing me in the right direction.
Cheers!
