I understand graphic programs (Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop), but haven't really gotten into making anything in SL yet.
I would like to make a dance machine sign and understand putting in the script, dances, etc. But my question is, what is a standard size to use when making a sign in my graphics program? 256x256, 512x512, etc. I am assuming 72dpi is fine too.
I want a large enough sign for residents to be able to read, but not lag the server.
Any info or pointing to link for information would be appreciated.
Thanks

Depends how big your sign is and how detailed it needs to be when zoomed in.
If it's smallish, or doesn't need any small fonts that must be zoomed in to read, 256 will do you fine.
If it's going to be large (possibly scaling more than one prim) or needs readable small text, go for 512.
512 lags more than 256, as I think you already know, but sometimes they are needed.

check the desogns and textures forum, theres a lot of info there on size and how to choose it ... normally 256x256 is just fine
as far as dpi, if your not gonna print it, it has no effect what so ever
