And I'm on the edge to leaving this house of cards. Second Life hasn't worked properly one single day the last week. And for this "experience" I pay a tier fee of 125 USD/month.

Land purchase: "request timed out"
08-11-2007 02:51
And just now I had to make about TEN attempts to buy a land parcel before it finally worked. I kept getting an error message about a "request timed out".

And now "land for sale" search hangs, just displaying "Searching... "

It's been ongoing for a while now, it's just gotten noticeably worse in the past couple of weeks.

I think it affects by sim.

Try logging into a different sim.

If you don't have a "start location" box under your username on the login screen, click preferences, then under General, check the "Show Start Location."

If you can't think of any random sim names off the top of your head, the "Terminal Locations" list at SLExchange can be useful:

WOW $125 US a month and I thought my $25 US a month was bad enough.

I mean I don't see what the big deal is. I mean, true, you can't build anything, buy anything, change anything on your avatar or on your land, find anything in search, or TP anywhere, but otherwise SL is working just fine, right .....

/sarcasm_off

Poor show by LL. Good luck for us seeing this improve much over the weekend though -- likely won't be getting significant attention until 9am SLT Monday ...

The situation this MONTH has been pretty intolerable - core issue piled on top of core issue, NONE of them resolved properly, unless you believe the PR fantasy on the blog, and then they quit for the weekend...

It's unprofessional and it's not good enough. It's also continuing SL's slide into becoming a laughing stock within both the media and the industry.

Having Philip show up at high profile venues here and there and... well, basically lying about SL, only works to a point. I rather think we have reached that point and pretty soon the media will start simply ignoring him.
It can't be long before his only audience will be his fans and other 'metaverse' pundits.

It's really depressing - the management requires a huge shake-up, before it's too late.
Personally I don't doubt SL could be made to work - but it requires the will to do so, and to make the hard decisions necessary to get LL working properly on the short and long term issues.

Ah well. it seems unlikely anyone with the influence, and the will, to make the required changes will see this, so, the best option is to sit back and continue to observe what is likely to be a sort of 'slow motion train wreck'.

A lot of these issues are re-occurences of issues claimed to be resolved. The ghost prim one being a good example.

My guess is that all of these issues stem from the same underlying cause - the sim code is not resilient to time-out errors from the backend database servers. Rather than failing cleanly when a database timeout occurs things get corrupted.

When these are claimed to be fixed, it does appear that what has been fixed is whatever is causing the timeout, rather than making the code resilient to timeouts in the first place. This turns out of be a short term measures because as soon as something goes slow for whatever reason, all the problems come straight back.

That's my reading of the issue - I could be totally wrong.

Well, let's hope that they've finally found the root cause of the problem. I've been rather obsessively watching inventory issues (a friend lost a full rather expensive and throughly customized AV to the various inventory fuckups several months ago). And I cringe each time something is declared "resolved" because it has generally meant that it's probably still broken, but none of the Lindens are looking at it anymore.

From: Teh Blog
While all of this has been going on, and still today, a serious bug in the Second Life software is causing 5-minute lock-ups of the communication channel between simulators and our various databases. This is a difficult bug to describe, but essentially, we see a very tiny percentage of database queries stall indefinitely after returning their data. Our software notices after five minutes and re-starts the database client, but by then some number of queries have usually been lost. This causes affected sims to occasionally (or in a few cases regularly) experience inventory problems, search problems, transaction problems, the works. Without any code changes, the bug seems to have gotten more common over the past week; on Friday evening the engineers working on the problem identified a potential fix, which we’ll be testing over the weekend.
