Is it safe to allow scripts to be run in a mall or casino?

Hi there - i'm just wondering.... is it safe to allow scripts to be run in a mall or casino?
Is it better to disallow it to reduce lag or the risk of exploits or griefing?

Inasmuch that dancing is scripting (in my view - am I wrong there?) and some casinos have a dance floor anyway I can see no problem Semolina. Are scripts any more vulnerable to exploits or griefing in a casino as anywhere else? Again, I can't see a reason why?

I think Semolina means to allow visitors to run their own scripted objects. I have no experience of this really. But I would defintelly turn it off. Why gamble?

Since we're talking about a casino, your question sounds quite funny :)

The reason to allow scripts is that people like their devices to work, so your place might be more popular allowing it. For example, people with XCite genitals might like to allow being stimulated by others in public (hopefully, in discreet mode), and might go elsewhere if your property doesn't allow it. Or they like to be able to turn their bling on and off.

I think it's less important for a mall than for a casino, but it depends on whether the mall is for shopping or lingering. And again, a mall that encourages lingering is likely to generate more sales.

Yes, it increases the possibility of an attack from griefers, and increases lag due to scripts people are running.

It's a security versus popularity issue, and only you can decide what the risk/benefit ratio means. In all but very rare cases, griefers cause only temporary harm -- and hopefully the loopholes that allowed them to explode objects is fixed. (LL even helped restore objects in cases where this happened, or so I read on this forum.) If the harm is only temporary, I would be tempted to allow at first and only disallow if it causes a problem.

And if your site becomes very popular for its content, people will go there regardless -- many of the most popular sites have scripts turned off just to minimize lag. But then, they can afford to. Can you?

Unless you manage to set your restrictions so all devices in your mall vendor group are still able to run scripts, turning off scripts in a mall would kill all the vendors in your mall. It's possible to set up the group permissions to allow scripts for a specific group and not for others, but it's a bit of a pain to set up.

A club or casino could not, in my opinion, disallow scripts. Too many guests use dance AO's and other scripted items as part of their 'club experience', and they would stay away in droves if thry couldn't use their scripted goodies.

... Yet the highest attended club in SL has scripts turned off.

Still, I agree -- the top can get away with it because they're at the top, for whatever reasons. Those climbing the ladder should do anything they can to make the patrons happy. Sometimes that's allowing it and sometimes it's disallowing it.

Most places that turn off outside scripts are trying to save resources - reducing "lag". Large and popular clubs are likley forced to turn off outside scripts.

Keep this in mind: One of the things that attracts most folks to SL in the first place is all the cool things you can do with and around your av. These cool things are driven by scripts - and if everyone gets to turning off scripting on thier land SL will rather be a far less interestig place. It's bad enough folks are senselessly restricting access to thier land.

I've looked in Group settings but I can't see how you allow one group to run scripts - can anyone help?

We have scripts turned off at the Shelter, and its made a gigantic difference when it comes to grief, and helps the lag situation.

Yes, its a detriment to some folks, and they may not return. But more folks were bothered by the grief & lag - the tradeoff was a no-brainer in retrospect :)

Check your "About Land" settings for your parcel. In the 'Options' tab, you'll see a bunch of rows of checkboxes, where you can define what 'anyone' can do, and what 'group members' can do.
