Question about the client.

I was wondering if there is some sort of memory leak in the client. Seems after even a short amount of time things start running damn slow. I clear the cache regularly and reboot my computer several times a day with rest peroids. Any ideas?

I have found that opening the task manager (in windows) after quitting, but before relaunching... can help return the ram that has become "unuseable", and speed up performance.

I also have seen this problem, especially after camping overnight. the game needs a relog. just doesn't seem very adept at clearing it's own cache very well.

But what's going on in the first few minutes, after arriving in a sim, or teleporting.. is your client is downloading EVERY TEXTURE IN THE SIM....so the bogdown might be just a matter of your cache is full. Try checking your prefferences to see what your cache is set to, it might be higher than the available HD space?

For me, it takes a while.. but Second Life will eventually use more and more memory. I will sometimes exit it and restart it so it starts out using less again.
Makes me want to put more RAM in my computer again, sometimes.

I haven't paid attention to how long it takes, though..

Awesome, i'll try that today. And as for HDD space I have about 40g free so thats not a problem. I'll just stick with the reboots then. Thanks.

I too have noticed this.

In my case, it manifests as textures not updating smoothly; a real killer when you're trying to play video poker with a fixed time limit...

I've noted clearing cache does not fix the problem by itself; usually a reboot is required.

Agreed. What i've been doing is clearing cache, log out, reboot, log in. Takes a whole 10 mins out of my night total bur oh well.

What helps me is clicking CONTROL ALT DELETE, go to PROCESSES tab, then click Secondlife.exe, right click and click SET AFFINITY. Uncheck one of the cpu boxes. For some reason, when i go back and forth, I am able to get out of the slowdown and my fps shoots back up. I do have a Pentium 4 Extreme Edition 2.8g.

Yes I also have similar problems.

In essence the longer Second Life runs the slower it becomes. But unlike some good people here I am not able to suggest any program alternatives.

What I do when sl becomes more or less unmanageable is to shut it down (it sometimes crashes) close down the computer completely, wait 1 minute, then cold boot up.

After that process I clear out IE cache files and cookies, separately clear SL's cache, then run a disk clean up (Windows program)

At that point the problem is solved.

Hope this simple approach helps
