Hello all,
Is there anyone here that is able to stream live video content in SecondLife using a windows operating system instead of Mac? I have looked all weekend through many sites, and even searched the forums here for a solution, but I have about drove myself crazy! I am curious to see what others are using/doing, if anything, to achieve this.
I have been experimenting with VLC Media Player and sucessfully been able to create live video streams that work on Windows Media Player, but not QuickTime. I could see this working if there was a plugin or addon or something that allowed you to play windows media streams in the QuickTime player??
I am also trying to create a scenario where I use my windows machine to encode the live vido stream, and send it to a linux-based server (such as Darwin?) capable of serving many clients.
I know I could just upload movie files or something to a site and not do it "live", but you know how annoying it is when you're watching a video in SL and your connection hiccups, and you have to start ALL OVER! LOL I'm trying to avoid all that headache.

You could try using Winamp...with the streaming addon.

I think there might be a windows port of the "Darwin Streaming Server". In addition, for live streams, you need hinted .mov or .mp4 files. Basically, preparing themovies for the streaming is more complex than the streaming itself....

Basically, preparing themovies for the streaming is more complex than the streaming itself.... A windows version is avaliable. So far, I havn't noticed any problems with running the windows 2000/2003 server version on XP. The biggest restriction you will run into is bandwidth. You will need alot of upstream to broadcast to even a couple people without having to make the movie look like crap with a really low bitrate. It does support relays, which you would likley use the linux server(s) as, so its probably a non-issue. Other than that, Fairlight is correct with hinting too. I've had to use mp4box (with YAMB for easier use) and vlc to transcode and hint a bunch of stuff. It's time consuming, and sometimes downright frusturating when you run into complications. Oh, and you will also need to install a perl interpreter to get access to the admin control panels for the streaming server. Have fun. If anyone else knows a better way, then I wouldn't mind hearing it also.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Unfortunately I'm not worried about the bandwidth part. The problem I am having is on-the-fly encoding. Let's say I want to use a webcam or play a file and stream the feed to a darwin (or other type) server on a linux box that's already capable of handling the connections/bandwidth I want. My main problem is how do i encode this video feed on the fly using a app in windows? I'll be honest I started reading about all the hinting and things in quicktime, and it makes no sense to me and maybe I'm wrong, but would not work for on the fly encoding.
So my other alternative was to find a way to make Quicktime player, play Windows Media player streams since I can already achieve successful on the fly streaming with VLC. I haven't found anything that does this yet, but I am sure anything is possible.
I'm running late for work! Wanted to reply and say thanks for all the suggestions and ideas, I will check out the links in the post this afternoon.
