It's not an attack. It's not a screw up by LL. It's not the asset server. It's an attack by the state of Texas: http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/01/01/network-issues/http://blog.secondlife.com/2007/01/01/network-issues/From: someone Latest Status Message: January 1, 2007, 7:28 pm Second Life is temporarily down due to a network outage near our Dallas server farm. See blog.secondlife.com for updates. What is it with Texas anyway? That state keeps screwing up my life.

I have to say. I pay rent on here for many shop locations. When the servers are down so often... Why are we paying for time we aren't using? Also being a paid user...I expect a certain amount of reliability for what I am paying for. I spend a good amount of money on here... But the appeal of a system which seems to frequently have update after update after grid down after restricted login after "Oh rent is due" *blink* But I've hardly been on all this time...
Hmmm....
I hope that somehow things start getting more grounded. SL sometimes ... even as enjoyable and serene as it can be at times... Isn't always worth all of this aggravation...
Get it together.

Get it together. This has nothing to do with LL. Do you understand that? It's a physical network problem somewhere in Texas, probably in the vicinity of their server farm. When you post, please, at the very minimum, read the FIRST POST in a thread. It saves everyone time.

Please, before posting, read the FIRST POST in a thread. It saves everyone time. I did read what it said... Im addressing SL as a whole as of lately. But I'm guessing you missed that.

Sorry, I was just trying to create a cube...and before I knew it...wham! Again, to everyone, my deepest apologies.

It's not really skin off my nose if you wish to state otherwise. Go ahead, I actually expect you to. However, what you attempted to do was clear: based on minimal and incorrect information, use the opportunity to voice your "get it together" message. What, pray tell, can LL do to "get it together" when a jackhammer accidentally severs a cable in Abilene?

Except it kind of does. Granted this is not LL's fault directly, but do they not have any sort of redundancy built into their network? Most business that depend on a network build in a certain amount of redundancy so that if one part of the network fails, there is another part that can take the load immediately. Users should not even notice there was ever a problem. If Linden seriously plans to continue scaling, they darn sure better have some sort of continuity of operations plan in place. Don't get me wrong, I love SL. It's precisely because I do that this sort of thing is so annoying.

Pretty hard to build redundancy in a part of the network you don't own. My understanding is that it was an internet server (you know......WWW?) that went down. I bet banks and other businesses are suffering the same problems too if their traffic was routed through that server too. Once the data leaves LL's servers it's pretty much at the mercy of the internet........not a damned thing LL can do to make it better or more reliable. Sorry, blaming LL for this is really grasping at straws. And yeah, I agree with however said that those Texans should put the servers in air conditioned rooms..........or at least a covered shed. LOL

The game within the game within the game within an economy within an... If it crashes everynow and then...I can deal.

If they were running Cisco equipment and had it set up the right way, then the equipment would recognize a link state failure and would forward the packets through another arm on the network. While this is a solution, it would slow things down as the network reconverged, and again as it was set back right again. The rerouted traffic would also slwo down the network's performance greatly. Taking the grid down might actually be the fastest and easiest way to resolve the issues.
That being said... No water at home (water main broke) and now no SL.... This new year is just not starting out too well for me!

I'm not blaming LL at all, I think for the most part they do a very good job with a complex system that has rapidly growing demand, and it may just be that they haven't yet caught up to the growing number of users. Growing pains are to be expected and I have every confidence they'll get through this period and these problems are temporary.
But it does seem that some sort of seriously robust COOP is needed so that problems like this don't disable the whole system. I trust they are doing that, but it apparently isn't all there yet.
Editing to add, I just read Graciella's message above mine and I can understand that it isn't a simple thing.

I've stickied the thread (and done a little renaming ^_^) I'll unsticky in the morning (or when the outage is over, which ever is later).
There is nothing LL can do about random-acts-of-god (or otherwise known as karma). They can try to guard them selves against it but fate has a way of blindsiding you.
So lets please all relax and find something in RL to do... make textures, clean house, drink, eat, poke the cat, you get the idea. We don't need to attack each other on the forum (and since it's against the forum guidelines... consider this a warning).

I agree that this has nothign to do with the LL's and SL itself, it's all georgie-poo's fault for being on his ranch in texas. THATS WHY IT WENT DOWN (Dick cheney probably hacked into it!) Anyways, i hope they get it back soon i have some ingame research to do
