Pyramid Scheme debit request object

I just saw an object named "I will make you rich ( free to copy )" at Orient 120, 231, 67 that had llSetText which said "Take a copy of this box. There is a lot of money in it." Figuring it would have some kind of linden dollars with pictures of Philip on it or some such silly thing I took it and since the area was no build, I attached it.

Turns out it is a pyramid scheme objects that repeatedly asks for permission to debit your account. After a few permission to debit requests, SL crashed. Upon restarting, permission to debits were still appearing.

It's a green cube with a "L$" and tiny question marks on the sides, like this. Exactly like this:

I'd advise against taking a copy of it.

If it's a pyramid scheme then yes, for sure.

a few months ago at an infohub (someplace in those double prim city sims) i got so sick of telling newbies not to click on things like this that I wrote a script that rezzed a semi-transparent object over them all as they appeared. then guy linden turned up and spent about twenty minutes deleting every one he could find.

And those gullible enough to believe they can get money for free still believe in the tooth fairy!

I see these things a lot (most often an actual pyramid, not a cube) and of course never use them. Do I understand correctly that the Lindens actually take action when these things are reported? Up until now I just thought of them as a nuisance, unethical but not prohibited. If they are prohibited, I will be happy to report any I see in future, they're an obvious noobie trap, even assuming they work the way they claim to instead of just plundering the account of the poor noob who doesn't know yet not to give debit permissions to suspicious objects.

definitely prohibited by the ToS. ARs are generally useless because autoreturn will usually get rid of them within a few hours at most. if you can grab a Linden they'll come along right away and wipe them all, but they're not so easy to grab thesedays.

I've just put a larger pyramid or cube over them hiding them from sight a few times, and as far as I know they are probably still under them there. Other times I have managed to get hold of the landowner who deletes them.

Maybe next time I'll just make a prim labelled "pyramid schemes are a violation of ToS" to place over the offending object next time I see one. That would take them out of commission until they are auto-returned.

For the actual pyramids, just get one of these to drop (if you can create objects on the land): http://www.slexchange.com/modules.php?name=Marketplace&file=item&ItemID=160062

It detects pyramids and covers them with a box, and sends a notecard to the offender. It's nice because if someone puts another pyramid down later, it automatically covers that one up too. It was created by the original pyramid creator to combat his own creation after it got out of hand. If you don't have a SLX account, I've got free to copy ones at my store. Not trying to make this post a shameless plug for my store - I hate those pyramid schemes with a passion and it's one of my personal crusades in SL.

Walker - you mentioned you have a script that covers other things - if it works on the green boxes too, would you consider making it available to the public?

It's in violation of multiple sections of the TOS.

Both the Pyramid Scheme clause and the DoS clause (crashing the client). I'll send this along to LR just to be on the safe side. See if we can't get it evaporated.

sure. i'll dig it out when i get on SL later. (i last used it around Jan/Feb.) it only works on the small pyramid prims and hippy pay machines, but could be easily modified to cover anything else. :)

To fool those who think the tooth fairy does still exist and they want you to join their merry go round, why hide it the Pyramid Scheme Box.. place a prim over the offending item, and make it totally clear texture, add a NC giver and a NC saying... The Tooth Fairy is a Myth... the worst that can happen is a lot of people needing therapy.. especially when they find out Father Christmas/Santa Clause has gone the same way...

Cool. Thanks. Normally I'm not a huge advocate of vigilante-ism (sp.?) - but I absolutely hate seeing newly-spawned folks who don't know any better getting ripped off, and frankly there just aren't enough Lindens around to keep this crap under control.
