This new "First Look Viewer" thing, just want to make absolutely sure, it's not going to show people what I look like in First Life, is it? First Look, First Life, both have First in them, can't be too sure....

;) :p

It's just a Feature Viewer with a new name, available to try out at http://secondlife.com/community/firstlook.php . Remember, it connects to the main grid, all transactions are real.

AMD Athlon 64 4000
GeForce 6800XT
2gb of RAM

I just finished a quick trip into SL with the new viewer and I did see a significant difference.

Textures loaded more slowly, BUT once they did load the colors were more vibrant and the texture more detailed than before.

Frame rate showed a small improvement. Might have had more effect o a slower system, but mine has always been pretty peppy.

All this with my Preferences set to the max on every value and a draw distance over 200.

Did you turn VBO (Vertex Buffer Objects) on in the Preferences Advanced Graphics tab?

Also fiddle with Client Rendering Run Multiple Threads, and Client Rendering HTTP_Get Textures.

I suspect it might be good to try changing your affinity settings to see if they make any difference.

The Feature Viewer forum at /333/1.html is the forum for discussing this particular test client.

I've tried it and love it. much faster. You do need to turn on VOB and make sure anisotropic filtering is off.

Not only does it show what you look like in First Life but is shows you naked!*

* Just kidding for the joke impaired.

The First Look Viewer sounds interesting, but... If, for some reason, I find it troublesome, what is the procedure for going back to the standard viewer? Is it uninstall FLV, download and install the standard viewer, then go? Or...is there some egregious gotcha that's gonna get me?

It installs in parallel with the regular viewer. You just start one or the other depending on which you want to run. It installs its own icon on your desktop.

Huge difference in FPS for me. I got 45 FPS steady with the First Look viewer in the same place I was getting 15 with the regular one. 300% increase!

That was the good. The bad was trees rendered improperly for me, and there's a glitch where typing in the chat bar sometimes triggers menus. For instance, type an F and you might pull down the File menu, as if you had pressed alt-F.

That's on a Pentium 4 2.54GhZ, 768MB RDRAM, 256MB nVidia Quadro FX 3000, if anyone's curious.

I just ordered a mega crazy uber rig of world domination though, which should arrive next week, and I'm super excited, so even though it's completely irrelevant to this thread, I'm mentioning it anyway. :D 3.64 GHz Intel Core2 Extreme Quad, dual 768MB GeForce 8800's, three 10,000 RPM hard drives, 2GB high performance DDR2 with heat spreaders, and lots of other cool toys. I'm sick to death of lag if you can't tell.

ahha it might be that pay have to pay googles of money like that just to play here is just silly!. I i really don`t think its going to make that much of a diff with that computer because of all the problems we are experincing at tha moment. I hav a pretty nice computer, but will all these issues there its useless ( with the first viewer ).anyways The client doesnt not support GC Member over 1giga. At the moment. Good luck withthe 8800 series cards and sl you need it!

File bug reports and send the crash reports - it's a test version, it's expected to fail. Some folk's activities may be such that a crash is no big deal; I fall in that category, so I can run test versions like this with no adverse consequences. If you're in the midst of building your big project, hosting a crowded game show, or deeply engaged in some cyber-amour, you'd probably want to be running the presumably more stable regular client. The more people who take the time to try out the First Look viewer and file bug reports and send crash reports the greater the chance we will get rendering improvements sooner rather than later and with less pain when they come.

The forum for the First Look viewer reports is at /333/1.html. Record your tales there but remember that's not a substitute for bug and crash reports.

I enabled VBO and it still looks exactly the same as the normal viewer. I don't know what you people are seeing. c.c Everything looks about the same as it always did. And i still get the usual 12 FPS i always have. Only difference i notice is that everything takes a lot longer to show up.
