Just a kick.

Playing around with VNC Lite (an iPod Phone/Touch app) I
connected to my Opensim. Works for Second Life too.

Nothing more than running "remote desktop"...but interesting.

Simulated image of the iPod body, but the screen cap is directly
off my Touch.

VNC is not an Ipod app. I'we seen it running on all sorts of things from phones to linux boxes. In fact, I used to use it on my Palm Pilot to remote into servers and set up new users till my boss decided she actually wanted me to GO places.

Oh yes it is:
I think Dances means it's not JUST an iPhone app. It's been around forever, free and better-performing than many commercial remote control apps.

Anyway, this is very cool. What frame rates do you get? Have you tried it from another city than the computer it's controlling?

I know someone who uses IRC on their iPhone to participate in Local Chat. I have to find out how that works; very handy if you want to go to a party or meeting that's mobbed or in a Homestead!

True. I should have made myself more clear. And I'll admit I get a bit annoyed when some mac addict thinks Apple invented this stuff.

Same here.

I can do the whole remote desktop on my Android phone.... AND my Netbook.

Just wish VNC would play nice with my router.

All I can say about iPhone? Um, I get 3G just about anywhere AND not using AT&T :p

Oh...I misunderstood Dances. I've been using VNC with PCs, Macs and Linux boxes for years.

But this is just a gimmick, the framerate is too slow for any
realistic use other than maybe chatting. And as far as I know
the pod has to be on the same local network. It does though
demonstrate that it probably wouldn't be THAT hard to get SL
working on an iPod, maybe something like the HTML version
that used to be around.

It makes you wonder what technological advances will be needed to make virtual worlds workable on a hand-held device.

Of course even that (fast framerate, ability to perform most functions we perform now on desktops [or their equivalent]) wouldn't be enough to let people replace their larger machines, for virtual world purposes.

Not until we can press a button on a palm-sized (or smaller) device and have a 3D world rise up around us....a nice 2m radius would be nice.
